V10 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A V10 is an engine in V configuration, having 10 cylinders.
The V10 configuration is inherently imbalanced in the vertical plane and generates a rocking moment causing vibration from end to end of the engine.
There are also cars with V10 engines in sports car racing, usually with Judd powerplants with 4 or 5 litre engines, made available for customers, although the first V10 was seen in the works Peugeot 905, in the final races of the 1990 World Endurance Championship season.

The V10 configuration is inherently imbalanced in the vertical plane and generates a rocking couple causing vibration from end to end of the engine.
The complexity of designing this made the V10 difficult to engineer without CAD, and therefore the V10 was never used before the 1980s.
The only other use of the V10 has been in Formula 1 racing, after the introduction of the 3 litre rule made the V10 seem the best compromise between the V8 and the V12.

Chrysler LA engine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The LA engine ( light or low A engine) was an evolution of the small-block Chrysler A engine.
The Viper V10 is loosely based on the rest of the LA family, and appeared with the Dodge Viper in 1992.
The same basic design as the Viper V10, but executed in cast iron, appeared in 1994 and was retired in 2002.

The very best engines, widely regarded to be those of the BMW Williams team are believed to be developing around 900 horsepower.
Engine suppliers will have to sell their engines to other teams at a reasonable price and a Formula One engine will have to last a whole race weekend.
In the past, engine manufacturers were free to pick and choose who to supply with engines, and the richer teams sometimes used individual engines for a qualifying session and then discarded them.

The engine is compressed at a ratio of 18:1.
A major requirement for the compact length of the engine is the new control and auxiliary unit drive grouped together on one level in an aluminium crankcase that is acoustically and mechanically isolated in a gear cassette.
For deployment in the V10 engine, the engineers had to redesign the newly conceived head into a crossflow version so that the inlet side in the V space between the two rows of cylinders could be created.

The basics are a vee in a 90° angle (meaning the engine is more compact and can thus be mounted lower in the nose of the M5 and M6 to aid handling performance), and a one-piece aluminium cylinder head containing four valves per cylinder.

Although Mika Salo's sixth place in the Australian race was promising, it was a disappointment to the Tyrrell-Yamaha engineers who reckoned that Salo would have finished fourth if he had a clear run in qualifying, instead spending much of his race stuck behind slower cars and having to settle for sixth place.
That remains to be seen, but there is no question that the Yamaha engine has a secret which everyone else wants to know, which is why the Tyrrell and Yamaha clans are being very careful not to leave their V10s lying around.
It should be remembered that a few years ago Renault lost two of its V10 engines in thefts from motor shows in France.

To comply with the new regulations, that stipulate the use of just one engine per car for two races, engine life must once again be doubled, compared with the previous year: we have thus moved from 400 km in 2003 to 700 km last year and now our target is 1400 km.
The 055 engine began life as an evolution of its predecessor (called the 053.) A great deal of work in terms of design and experimentation was and will be focussed as a priority, on meeting and maintaining the necessary reliability for this new mission profile.
The team of Ferrari engine engineers continues, through the stability of the group, to grow in experience and responsibility, both in design and development (with a strong team of specialists in all areas: combustion, dynamics, bench testing etc.,) and in the running of the engine on the track.

 GrandPrix.com > News > Ferrari V10 to rethink F1 engine design?
F1 engine design has not changed since the 1960s, with the engines being used as load-bearing units, linking the monocoque with the gearbox and rear wheels.
This has meant that the engines needed to be built to accept chassis loading: having had to be heavier than is actually necessary because, overall, it is still possible to build a lighter car if the engines are load-bearing.
The advantages of a smaller and lighter engine block are that weight can be transferred forward and that the engine can run at higher revs.

After qualifying it was revealed that the BMW V10 engines of Ralf Schumacher and Juan Pablo Montoya passed the speed threshold of 19,000 revolutions per minute for the first time.
