EVWORLD FEATURE: Putting More Wind on the Wire with V2G: Wind Power | Vehicle-to-Grid | Electric and Plug-In Hybrid Cars
While Dr. Kempton notes in his presentation before the California Air Resources Board that the current electric grid is relatively dirty since a large percentage of it relies on coal, the overall system is getting cleaner and the source of the pollution is centrally located.
My comments are actually in continuation of some comments I made on the first of these V2G series of articles here at EV World of which this is #2 in the series.
I have chosen to come out of the quiet place I usually keep to declare that PHEV in the V2G arena are being erroneously represented, maybe via ignorance, maybe via agenda but, either way at a loss of viable choices to those who are pondering the overall possibility of V2G.

V2G vehicles may provide an income resource to their owners, may provide system reliability to the power grid, may reduce dependence on foreign oil supplies, and may reduce air pollution.
PPL expects the team to research V2G vehicles to learn more about their potential to provide greater electric grid reliability at an economical price, provide benefit to the consumer, and to reduce pollution.

V2G technology allows hybrid vehicles to feed electricity into city power grids   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
V2G technology takes advantage of the fact that gas/electric hybrid cars -- and in the future, fuel cell hybrid vehicles -- are power generation stations on wheels, and that power generation capability sits idle more than 90% of the time.
Essentially, the promise of V2G is that of a distributed power generation network that can be tapped to supplement the already-existing power generation capability of any electrical grid.
There are V2G fuel cell buses being used in Toronto, Daimler-Chrysler is working on a pickup truck with V2G capability, a city in Florida is reported to be purchasing 50 city buses that are V2G capable, and a company called AC Propulsion plans to make 1000 V2G electric vehicles starting next year.

The study estimates that a properly managed V2G car could net the owner close to $3,000 per year.
Looking even further into the future, the Electric Power Research Institute, of Palo Alto, CA, predicts that power from electric-drive vehicles could reduce the global requirement for central station generation capacity by up to 20% by the year 2050.
"We hope our findings on the feasibility of V2G will take hold with decision makers, policymakers, and auto manufacturers as they plan standards for electric transportation," says Letendre.
