V9FS -- 9P file systems for Linux, FreeBSD, and Other Unix Systems   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-16)
The v9fs kernel code was merged into Linux's 2.6.14 development tree last week - marking a fairly major transition for the v9fs project.
The v9fs linux Cogito repository has moved to kernel.org.
The 2.6 port of V9FS and performance analysis was supported in part by the Defense Advance Research Projects Agency under Contract No. NBCH30390004.

LWN: Patch: v9fs - 9P2000 Support for Linux
The V9FS project (http://v9fs.sourceforge.net) is an attempt to bring Plan 9's unified approach to resource sharing to Linux and other operating systems via support for the 9P2000 resource sharing protocol.
V9FS HISTORY V9FS was originally developed by Ron Minnich and Maya Gokhale at Los Alamos National Labs (LANL) in 1997.
There are a couple of mailing lists supporting v9fs, but the most used is v9fs-developer@lists.sourceforge.net -- please direct/cc your comments there so the other v9fs contibutors can participate in the conversation.

v9fs is a Unix implementation of the Plan 9 9p remote filesystem protocol.
We hope to extend support to other operating systems and future versions of Linux, however it is unlikely that Linux kernels earlier than 2.4.22 will ever be supported.
This module registers the v9fs and v9fs_wire filesystems and implements the VFS layer of the 9p protocol.

Its our hope that these improvements and cluster applications will motivate more wide-spread use of the v9fs module.

It's a starting point for fleshing out the documentation of the actual protocol (and will be shortly joined by a 9P2000.u RFC).
I figure this might be a more digestible form for the liunix guys (particularly once I flesh out the content a bit more) -- this whole exercise is motivated by my attempt to get the v9fs project accepted into the Linux kernel mainstream.
Source is in (v9fs.sf.net) CVS under v9fs/doc/rfc -- there's actually a bunch of different swags at it there, but current stuff is generated from 9p.xml (which there is a set of perl scripts on the net to generate.roff,.html, or.txt from) Comments/additions/etc. welcome from the 9fans community.

Andrew noted, 'I'm not sure that this has a sufficiently high usefulness-to-maintenance-cost ratio.' Defined in this rfc, v9fs is a connection-oriented networked filesystem.
