  RAF CALGARY:OUR AIRCRAFT:VC10
The VC10 C1Ks were delivered to the RAF in 1966 and are the longest serving aircraft in the Service's inventory.
Of the thirteen examples of the VC10 C1K, one was used by British Aerospace as a test bed and 12 were converted into the air-to-air refuelling capability, but maintained their passenger carrying role.
VC10 K2/K3/K4 Five standard VC10s were purchased from Gulf Air and four Super VC10s from East African Airways.

Designed and built to exacting standards, the VC10 was designed to operate in the difficult and demanding operating environment of the so-called 'Empire' routes, which combined tropical conditions with limited facilities.
In Africa the VC10 attained near mythical status with East African Airlines, Ghana and Nigeria Airways, and the RAF version is now part of RAF folklore as both a transport and an air-to-air refuelling platform.
The potential of the VC10 was often overshadowed and affected by the politics surrounding it.

The VC10 C1K is a dual role Air Transport (AT) and Air-to-Air Refuelling (AAR) aircraft.
The VC10 C1K although now old and suffering from both limiting airframe restrictions as well as air traffic restrictions, such as noise and the new avionics requirements for modern civil airspace, still remains a very capable dual role aircraft.

VC10 admits she enjoys writing a good complaint letter, and she doesn't stop at minions in "Customer Service" departments, who often will only provide an apology but no action on the complaint.
VC10 points out that these tactics will only work for large companies, if you have a problem with a small firm it is usually the boss you deal with anyway and most of the time they are not interested.
VC10 says that bosses will always kick out when you tell them there is a problem with their company, but for us it has had only positive results.

The VC10 C1K is a dual role transport and air-to-air tanker aircraft.
The VC10 C1K can also be refuelled from VC10K or Tristar tanker aircraft by use of its air to air refuelling probe, which is permanently attached to the aircraft nose.
A replacement for both versions of the VC10 and the Tristar is being sought under the Future Strategic Tanker Aircraft (FSTA) programme.

Originally a long haul international airliner the VC10 first entered RAF service in 1965 as the C.1 strategic transport.
The VC10s were designated K.2 and the Super VC10s K.3 while the K.4 designation was applied to a further five Super VC10s converted later but not fitted with the additional main deck tanks.

 Vickers VC10
Known as the Vanjet VC10, the design evolved into a three-engined airliner which was planned to be available in two versions: a short to medium range aircraft and a long-range aircraft.
In fact the annual utilisation of the VC10 and Super VC10 was the highest in the BOAC fleet, its load factors were always significantly higher than the 707 and the actual operating profit was also the highest in BOAC, beating even the 707.
The VC10 was the heaviest and most powerful aircraft the RAF had received up to that time and introduced a global transport capability which was entirely new to the RAF.

 FlightSim.Com Review: David Chester's Vickers Super VC10
The origins of this intercontinental passenger jet lie in a project called the V.1000, whose development history was remarkably similar to that of the Boeing 707, in that Vickers promoted it as a strategic transport for the RAF, while they were actually keeping their eye on the much larger civil market.
After a good deal of initial tweaking, the VC10 is now at version 1.05, but unless David changes we suspect it is likely to carry on being improved with further point updates.
The VC10 might have been quiet inside, but it wasn't difficult to hear them coming and a full throttle departure from Heathrow used to drown out the conversation for several minutes.

 Vickers VC10 History
Their strict requirements had to be incorporated by Vickers and the project continued as the re-designed VC10.
The VC10 was more expensive to buy than a 707 and BOAC’s damning figures cost Vickers a number of overseas sales and effectively doomed the VC10 to commercial failure.
The VC10 now only operates in the RAF, where it has been a good servant for many years as the converted ‘K’ series of transport and in-flight refueling tanker.

They were able to carry 146 troops over a distance of 3760 miles without refuelling and in 1986 a VC10 with a full load of passengers was refuelled in the air by a VC10K tanker, allowing it to carry troops some 4200 miles non-stop.

Crutchfield Advisor - Subwoofers - Enclosed Subwoofer Showdown: the 4 roads to bass nirvana!
The port — a round opening in the enclosure with a tube extending into the interior — provides a release for bass waves emanating from the rear of the speaker inside the cabinet, so that they reinforce the output from the front of the speaker.
To balance the bass with the rest of the system, I had to fade 3 steps on my Pioneer receiver toward the front speakers, which would make the impact of this ported box roughly halfway between that of the Kicker sealed box and the Alpine bandpass box.
Technically, the VC10 won't play quite as low as its sealed cousin, but it actually sounded like it was hitting deeper because of its extra-strong emphasis in the second lowest octave.

 Airliners.net: Vickers VC10
The VC10 was based on a BOAC specification for a large airliner that would be able to operate economically on their 'hot and high' routes in Africa.
In it's time the VC10 was the largest aircraft that had ever been produced in the United Kingdom, and although a very sophisticated design it completely lost out to the Boeing 707 and Douglas DC-8.
The VC10 became the victim of several issues, the two main ones being the timing of it's debut and the Standard's compromise between performance and operating costs.
