Vintage Synth Explorer - Electronic Music Studios (EMS) VCS3   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-25)
The VCS3 (nicknamed the Putney) is an analog monosynth housed in a distinctive angled wooden case, a truly classic synth.
Instead of patch wires, the VCS3 uses a patchbay grid in which the synth components are laid out, and signal routing is accomplished by placing small pins into the appropriate slots.
Additonally, the VCS3 was also sold in a plastic breif-case and called the Synthi A.

 brut smog: The venerable VCS3
The VCS3 was a standalone instrument; a keyboard was available but was not an integral part of the instrument and often seemed to get in the way of creative patching.
Perhaps because of its keybapord unfriendliness the VCS3 has sometimes been dismissed as a sound effects or weird noise generator and even by Wendy Carlos as a toy, which misses the point that electronic music was never meant to be about interval and key and all that other well tempered nonsense.
The matrix patch bay of the VCS3 make this an instrument for electronic composition, the patchbay is in effect the keyboard and a complex patch the score, the time variable being supplied by the rising and falling of the oscillators and envelope signals.

 Hollow Sun - Cynthia
Cynthia is a re-creation of the legendary EMS VCS3 and Synthi-A analogue synthesisers.
The VCS3 / Synthi-A were actually quite modestly spec'd with three oscillators (that could double as audio or low frequency controllers), a filter, a single envelope shaper, a ring modulator, a noise source, a spring reverb and a (sort of) stereo output section.
What made the VCS3 / Synthi-A unique was the pin matrrix patchboard where literally anything could be connected to anything simply by inserting a pin into the appropriate co-ordinate on the pin board.

Because the VCS3 is modular, this is a far more powerful arrangement than the signal inputs on pre-patched monosynths, allowing you to use an external signal as an extra module, maybe as an audio source, a CV source, or even a Gate.
The VCS3 was difficult to program but, a year before the appearance of the Minimoog and ARP2600, it brought synthesis within the reach of the public.
Descendents Of The VCS3 Designed by David Cockerell, the Synthi A was functionally identical to the VCS3, the difference being that it was built into a Spartanite attaché case.

 EMS Modifications
The main change during the lifetime of the VCS3 and Synthi A was with the introduction of the KS sequencer when the power supply was uprated to provide extra power to the 8-way Keyboard socket.
The original VCS3 (Putney) had the early power supply and the Synthi VSC3 II and the Synthi AKS had the later.

We had a VCS3 doing those bass notes, and all that clicking comes off a Fender Precision bass I played, that click clock click clock." The Rototoms - shallow tom toms which are tuned to a distinct note - were difficult to record because they had to be retuned for each chord change.
This was added by Nick Mason playing along with his bass drum." Waters made a late lyric change when he introduced the phrase "Tired of lying in the sunshine" at the start of the second verse, replacing the earlier live version's "Lying supine in the sun".
The lead instrument is a VCS3 synthesizer with a very long tape echo, backed by a tremolo guitar, bass, drums, Uni-Vibed guitar, organ and scat guitar.

Inverting the Trapezoid output is a common modification to the VCS3.
If I could have done this, it would have been possible to produce a Patch Matrix consisting of a single Patch Pin (which could be duplicated as many times as necessary) with selectable input and output destinations, which would have been simpler and run faster.

Roger explains the creative process: "The VCS3 was a synth that was invented and manufactured by a man named Peter Zinovieff.
It was just a bank of three or four oscillators that generated sine waves, square waves and saw-tooth wave signals, which you could program through a ring modulator or a series of filters, or an envelope generator in different combinations.

I'm blessed with an EMS VCS3 "The Putney" Mk I in great shape but can't help thinking that if I could hook it up to a MIDI->CV interface I'd be using it a whole lot more than merely for therapy.
I understand someone has to modify the VCS3 for this to be possible, and then there's the issue with the non standard voltage to frequency ratio.
The High level inputs can be used for CV too, just need to add a 100K resistor to the jack lead.
