	VFA-31 Fighter Squadron THREE ONE
		Fighter Squadron (VF) 31 "Tomcatters" is the second oldest fighter squadron operating in the U.S. Navy today; their history dates from the commissioning of the VF-1B Shooting Stars in 1935, flying the Boeing F4B-4.
		CDR James R. Barnett, commanding officer of Fighter Squadron 31 (VF 31), was temporarily relieved of command, 21 February 1995 pending completion of an investigation into the 13 January 1995 mishap in which two F-14D "Super Tomcats" from the Miramar-based squadron collided in mid-air.
		Fighter Squadron (VF) 31 returned home to Naval Air Station (NAS) Oceana on Oct. 31, 2004, from a five-month Western Pacific deployment with the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74).

	Fighter Squadron Eleven - Squadron History
		(redesignated VF-A) transferred to the Pacific theater in 1944 on board the USS Bunkerhill and USS Essex and flew the first air strikes against Tokyo in the Grumman F6F Hellcat.
		Up until 1996 the squadron only had one modified Tomcat, but by the time the squadron deploys to the western Pacific it will have 6 aircraft with the NVG system installed.
		Long term Navy plans envisage the system being fitted to all F-14's, providing an excellent complement to the LANTIRN night vision and targeting system that is now in use with all VF squadrons.

		Graduating in 1933, he served as a gunnery officer before reporting to NAS Pensacola, Florida, for flight training.
		After becoming a naval aviator in 1936, he joined Fighting Squadron (VF) 1B aboard the USS Langley and later the USS Lexington.
		In 1937, he was transferred to VF-6 aboard USS Enterprise and served 2 years before being reassigned to VP-22 flying the Consolidated PBY Catalina from Pearl Harbor.
