  Linux VFAT Filesystem
The VFAT filesystem is a Linux filesystem that is compatible with Windows 95 and Windows NT long filenames on the FAT filesystem.
The vfat filesystem used to be named xmsdos, but it was renamed to vfat.
Fixes a problem in the msdos and vfat filesystems where moving an open file causes all subsequent writes to that file to be lost.

What is VFAT? - A Word Definition From the Webopedia Computer Dictionary
Short for Virtual File Allocation Table, a virtual installable files system driver used in Windows for Workgroups and Windows 95.
VFAT operates in protected mode and serves as an interface between applications and the File Allocation Table (FAT).
Contains brief technical descriptions of the FAT file system, VFAT, HPFS, and NTFS.

 Virtual FAT (VFAT)
Support was added for long file names and also for better control over such matters as disk locking, so utilities could access the disk in "exclusive mode" without fear of other programs using it in the meantime.
Despite the new name and new capabilities, VFAT as a file system is basically the same as FAT is. Most of the new capabilities relate to how the file system is used, and not the actual structures on the disk.
Even here, VFAT supports these using what is basically a hack, as opposed to anything really revolutionary.

 Definition of VFAT
Stands for "Virtual File Allocation Table." Older Windows operating systems (Windows ME and earlier) used a file system called "FAT" or "FAT32." The file system is what the operating system uses to organize and access files on the hard drive.
VFAT, introduced with Windows 95, was an improvement to the basic FAT file system, allowing more information to be stored for each file.
Personally, I use the term VFAT to refer to the size of my cat.

The escape character is ':' because it is otherwise illegal on the vfat filesystem.
TEST SUITE ---------------------------------------------------------------------- If you plan to make any modifications to the vfat filesystem, please get the test suite that comes with the vfat distribution at http://bmrc.berkeley.edu/people/chaffee/vfat.html This tests quite a few parts of the vfat filesystem and additional tests for new features or untested features would be appreciated.

Unfortunately, this plugin is not solely limited to USB drives, as my testing with it is being done on a VFAT partition on my hard drive.
If the filesystem is not actually vfat, some renaming checks are skipped (since the plugin is a generic one that can work with pretty much any mounted filesystem...in fact, it's been renamed to "Generic Audio Player").
What the plugin does (in fact, what all of the device plugins do, which currently are vfat/generic, ifp, and ipod) is provide an implementation of various functions for the respective devices.

To be able to use rsync between an ext3 and a vfat partition, there are some requirements to fulfill, and some of those are quite subtle.

The VFAT system is an extension of the existing FAT file system designed to support both old DOS / WIN16 / OS/2 / Linux applications which only supports 8.3 (both OS/2 and Linux supports LFN, just not on FATFS).
VFAT achieves this new advantage by introducing a new variation of the ordinary Directory Entry (see FAT explanation).

VFAT is simply a way to store more information in the FAT directory.
The most important feature of VFAT is the ability to store long file names.
Because VFAT uses the old FAT directory to add some unusual new entries, the VFAT additions can be damaged if the disk is manipulated by a DOS or OS/2 disk utility that does not understand the new structure.

Operating Systems and their File Systems
One of VFAT's most important accomplishments was to enable the use of long file names in Windows 95, as well as all applications written for it, while maintaining compatibility with older software that had been written before VFAT was implemented.
While all of these changes improved the manner in which the file system was used, nothing had been done to really improve the actual structures on the disk The only change that made any improvement at all to the structure was the addition of long file names.
Aside from the difference in the way FAT 32 creates and numbers the clusters, it is, for the most part, the same as regular VFAT, with some of the same descriptions of the FAT file structures applying to FAT 32.
