Vishva Hindu Parishad - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-16)
On December 6, 1992 the Babri Masjid was demolished by a large congregation of VHP activists and protestors who had been camping in the city for weeks.
The VHP leaders claimed their mission was to guard and defend the entire Hindu faith and communities all over the country.
While elderly leaders like Acharya Giriraj Kishore and Ashok Singhal led the VHP from the 1970s, the reins of the organisation in the 21st century seems to be passing to a younger, more radical and vigorous generation, headed by Praveen Togadia, a Gujarati oncologist.

VHP back to brinkmanship, sants demand its ban, The Milli Gazette, Vol.3 No.14, MG60 (16-31 Jul 02)
Three months after the VHP gave an undertaking that it would abide by the court verdict on the vexed Babri Mosque-Ram Temple dispute case, the Parishad has dissociated itself from its earlier assurance given to the central government and has waged a war on the Constitution and the judiciary.
The VHP asserts that religious issues are above law and the construction of the Ram Temple is a matter of belief for the Hindus.
The VHP maintained that it decided to withdraw its assurance after the government had failed to honour its promises which included the lifting of restrictions on the movement of pilgrims in Ayodhya in March and passing of an order to hand over the undisputed land in Ayodhya to the Ram Janambhoomi Trust by June 2.

The Hindu : Don't blame VHP
For years, the VHP had bought the sites around the disputed structure to enable the construction of a temple for the idol that is worshipped.
In 1989, during Rajiv Gandhi's Prime Ministership, the foundation stone for the temple was laid in the land purchased by the VHP.
The VHP is not at all responsible for this crisis as even 15 months ago the organisation gave notice to the Government to find a peaceful solution to enable the construction of the temple.

The VHP unequivocally claims that the present Masjid was once the site of a magnificent temple which the Mughal emperor Babar demolished in the 16th century.

VHP reconsiders Temple issue, The Milli Gazette, Vol. 3 No. 11
In fact, the Temple issue has become liability for the VHP and the BJP after the March 15 fiasco in Ayodhya when the sants openly charged the Parishad leaders of not being serious in the construction of the shrine.
The VHP knew it well that if any problem was created by it by taking up the Ram Temple Construction in its new phase of agitation from June 2, the coalition government in U.P. may not survive.
However, apparently under pressure from the sants, the VHP has convened a two-day meeting of the Margdarshak Mandal at Hardwar from June 22 to decide the future course of action regarding the Ram Temple construction.

VHP working president Ashok Singhal yesterday clarified that their current plan is only to move the construction material to the site and not start the actual construction, the schedule for which, will be announced at a later date.

VHP's insistence on a written government promise, it was clarified, was because Vajpayee had promised to resolve the Ayodhya dispute by March 12, a promise he has not been able to keep.

BBC NEWS | World | South Asia | Profile: The Vishwa Hindu Parishad
The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) was founded in 1964 by a group of senior leaders from a hard-line Hindu organisation, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), to give Hindus what they believed would be a clearly defined sense of religious identity and political purpose.
The VHP has tended to tone down the rhetoric of Hindu supremacy and even make an occasional distinction between fellow (Muslim) citizens of the present and (Muslim) 'marauders' of the past.
Following the success of their campaign, senior VHP leaders announced at a religious meeting in 1984 their programme to "liberate" a site in Ayodhya from an ancient mosque to make way for a temple to the Hindu god Ram.

The Hindu : VHP's specious logic
First, is the VHP's untenable position — strangely backed openly by some of the BJP's senior leaders — that its belief in the disputed site at Ayodhya being the birthplace of Lord Ram is a matter of "faith" which no law or judicial verdict can override.
Sudershan's confidence that the VHP protest would be wholly peaceful, "Ram bhakts" had no hesitation to hurl from roof tops stones and bricks on police.
For, no cause whatsoever, and certainly not one of the kind the VHP and its allies are espousing, can be sustained decade after decade, especially if it is cynically raked up only at election time and put back into cold storage afterwards.

The recent charges levelled by the VHP against the Government are sure to figure, for this kind of public exchange of words bordering on the abusive between "sister organisations'' of the RSS can hardly help the BJP in the electoral battles that lie ahead.
