Topic: VHSIC

  VHSIC Hardware Description Language
VHDL or VHSIC Hardware description language is commonly used as a design-entry language for FPGAs and ASICs.
VHDL was originally developed at the behest of the US Department of Defense in order to document the behaviour of the ASICs that supplier companies were including in equipment.

Digital Application-Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs) designed after 30 September 1988 shall be documented by means of structural and behavioral VHSIC Hardware Description Language (VHDL) descriptions in accordance with IEEE 1076.
Behavioral VHDL descriptions shall describe the input/output behavior at a sufficiently detailed level to permit the behavioral description to be used within a larger VHDL model for test generation and fault grading of the containing model.
When advanced digital modules or boards are developed, microcircuits incorporating the VHSIC ETM-BUS or VHSIC TM-BUS should be used.

This was the proximate cause of the decision to develop the VHSIC Hardware Description Language, VHDL [1].
At about this time, Ada was young, and there was an idea of using Ada in the early stages of the design of a system without regard to which parts would eventually become custom hardware, and which would stay software.
In 1980, however, it was concluded at the VHSIC conference in Woods Hole that Ada was inadequate for use as a HDL even though no Ada compiler was yet available, and Ada capabilities could not yet be properly evaluated.

The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) supported the development of VHDL (VHSIC hardware description language) as part of the VHSIC (very high-speed IC) program in the early 1980s.
The companies in the VHSIC program found they needed something more than schematic entry to describe large ASICs, and proposed the creation of a hardware description language.
VHDL was then handed over to the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) in order to develop and approve the IEEE Standard 1076-1987.
