VIA C3 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Although the predecessor to the VIA C3 was called the "VIA Cyrix III," both it and the VIA C3 are based on the CPU design technology of Centaur Technology, makers of the WinChip C6.
According to VIA, the VIA C3 was to be superseded in 2003 by the VIA C4 - a clone of the Intel Pentium 4 processor.
VIA has stated the C7 bus is physically based upon the Pentium-M 479-pin packaging, but uses the proprietary VIA V4 bus for electrical signalling, instead of Intel’s AGTL+ Quad Pumped Bus, avoiding legal infringement.

VIA does not believe that performance in these applications is an important factor for the VIA C3 processor’s target market".
VIA has designed a CPU to go head to head with the Intel, but only under some common business type applications and that type of use is profiled better under Winstone99 than some of the newer tests.
While the VIA C3 currently costs about $11 less than an Intel Celeron 800 at the wholesale level, that just isn’t a big factor when they both are so inexpensive anyway.

PCCHIPS M789CLU-2000 platform on VIA C3 processor   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
According to the original positioning of first VIA C3 (it's just how these processors are called), they were aimed at inexpensive office machines, and the recent visit of Richard Brown, VIA's marketing vice president to Russia has proved that.
The latest announced VIA C3 Samuel 2 processor offered 800 clock speed with 13W maximum heat emission, and communication with the chipset was effected using 133 MHz bus licensed from Intel and similar to Pentium III.
VIA has no plans to further develop the C3 platform (if we disregard the minor remakes and migration of the IBM 0.11 mk process technology using SOI), but anyway the company is not yet going to phase out the production, to which there is a number of reasons.

CPU VIA C3 733 MHz and VIA PLE133 based Motherboards
The processors from VIA Technologies are still based on the old core developed by Centaur, where a computing unit with a floating point is a weak point.
The second processor is, however, more interesting - VIA Technologies promised to use a new core C5X in the Ezra processor, which meant higher performance especially as far as calculations with a floating point are concerned.
This is the second weak point of the VIA CPU: it is either an organization of the cache memory to be blamed which makes much more mistakes than in case of Intel, or its latency.

What's next for Via and the C3?
The C3, however, cannot replace the P3 in this manner as the chip in its current configuration is incapable of maintaining even a rough level of total performance parity with the Intel CPU.
Via can choose to continue using and advancing the Socket 370 platform, but in three to four years any Intel-compatible platform Via is currently using will have to be scrapped.
Via has two choices: Either the C3 must be redesigned to make it clock-for-clock competitive with the other x86 CPUs on the market -- with either a unique chipset of its own or pin-compatible with an AMD design -- or it must shift the chipset that the EPIA platform is designed on.
