Commodore VIC-20 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The ease of programming the VIC and availability of an inexpensive modem combined to give the VIC a sizeable library of public domain and freeware software, although much smaller than that of the C64.
The name "VIC" came from the Video Interface Chip, which, despite its designation, also handled all the sound synthesis in the VIC-20.
The VIC chip's successor, the graphics-and-RAM-refresh VIC-II, was used to great success in Commodore's later best-selling machine, the C64, and also in the dual video output C128 for that computer's 40-column/composite video graphics.

VICS OF he Commodore VIC-20 was not my first love in personal computers, nor will it be my last.
Poor VIC (I like to think this was short for Victoria, though it really meant "video interface chip"): born with so many strikes against it, with an antiquated microprocessor for a brain, always considered the runt of the family, ready to be sacrificed at a marketer's whim.
VIC's was a classy chassis, a compact design that turned out to be every bit as definitive as the pregnant typewriter silhouette of the Apple II or the schizophrenic detachable keyboard of the IBM PC.

The Video Interface Chip (or VIC as it is commonly called) is one of the most important silicon chips in the VIC-20 microcomputer, coming second only to the 6502A microprocessor itself.
The VIC is a specially constructed input-output (I/O) chip that offers a large variety of functions, but as suggested by its name, is primarily concerned with the production of the video output signal.

The VIC 20 was introduced in 1981 as the successor to the PET.
CBM attempted to replace it with the doomed C16 until the all-conquering C64 was released.
The name VIC comes from the video chip 'Video Interface Controller' but was sold as the VC-20 in Germany because VIC is a swearword(!) The identical serial interface means many peripherals are interchangeable with the 64.

Commodore VIC 20 Computer at the January 1981 Consumer Electronics Show
Commodore Business machines, famous for their PET computers with integral displays, introduced the VIC 20 at the Winter CES in January 1981, the same show where RCA displayed the upcoming CED system.
As time went on Commodore reduced the price of the VIC 20, and in January 1982 introduced the VIC Modem, a compact 300 baud unit priced at $110 that attached to the modular handset cord (not the wall cord) of standard telephones.
A VIC 20 with this modem and a terminal emulator ROM cartridge became the cheapest way to access early on-line information services like CompuServe and The Source.

Just as the VIC 20 was becoming popular and many stores and some multi-level marketing organizations had acquired significant inventories, rumors began to emerge that Commodore was completing work on a vastly more powerful version of the VIC 20 to be called the VIC 64, which of course was eventually released as the Commodore 64.

The Vic 20 network code allows a Vic 20 to be connected to an ethernet network and, while it works, it suffers from one drawback, it can only support one TCP connection at any time.
This is most noticeable when opening a web page with multiple images on it as once one connection is open all the others wait at least one time out time before trying again.
While this is a desirable feature it introduces another degree of complexity to the code and the need to keep track of what has been sent or received requires more of the limited system memory.
