Topic: VLT

Very Large Telescope - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
VLT is located at the Paranal Observatory on Cerro Paranal, a 2,635 m high mountain in the Atacama desert in northern Chile.
The VLTs are equiped with a large set of instruments permitting observations to be performed from the near-UV to the mid-IR (ie a large fraction of the light wavelengths accessible from the surface of the Earth), with the full range of techniques including high-resolution spectroscopy, multi-object spectroscopy, imaging, and high-resolution imaging.
In particular, the VLT has several Adaptive optics systems, which at infrared wavelengths correct for the effects of the atmospheric turbulence, providing images almost as sharp as if the telescope was in space.

VLT may allow a subdivision of farm—transfer of a pasture to a neighboring farm, for example—if the transfer would assist the neighboring farm operation without hindering farming activity on the retained farmland.
Their purpose is to give VLT the opportunity to purchase the land and offer it for resale to another farmer and/or to keep the land affordable for future generations.
VLT may only transfer the conservation easement to a state agency, town or a qualified conservation organization that agrees to enforce the easement.

 Very Large Telescope (VLT)
This gives the VLT a maximum angular resolution of about 0.001 arc-second at 1 micron wavelength (in the near-infrared), which is equivalent to about 2 meters at the distance of the Moon.
Used in interferometric as distint from individual-instrument mode, however, the VLT is only sensitive to objects with a high surface brightness, such as stars and the nuclei of active galaxies.
In 2005, scientists using the VLT announced they had obtained the first direct photograph of an extrasolar planet — 2M1207b, which orbits the star 2M1207 more than 200 light-years away in the constellation Hydra.

In fact, VLTs, labelled the crack cocaine of gambling by critics, were kept by all but six of the 31 communities that voted on the issue.
VLT opponents vowed to continue pressing the provincial government to keep its promises to help problem gamblers and perhaps even to remove VLTs to casinos.
Justik points to the enormous social costs that VLT addictions cause: an increase in the number of suicides; an increase in crime and in jail and welfare costs, and the "pain and remorse" caused to families of gambling addicts.

Proposed New York VLT Plan: More to Purses, Tracks | bloodhorse.com
The VLT law was approved at the end of 2001, but tracks have complained the program would, under current revenue-sharing numbers, amount to a money-loser.
Under the current VLT law, 60% of what is left after winnings are paid goes to education, 25% to the racing industry, and 15% to the Lottery Division.
The VLT law also faces a lawsuit that claims, in part, the program is illegal because the constitution forbids sharing of lottery proceeds with anything other than education programs.

The VLT Survey Telescope or VST is a proposed 2.5m telescope with a wide field imager intended to aid the VLT in its scientific aims, and would be located at the same site as the VLT in Chile
It is planned to have a 1 arcminute field of view and aiming to reach magnitudes as faint as R of 25.
It would work primarily on surveys of large areas of the sky from which individual targets could be selected for closer study using the greater power of the 4 8m class telescopes that make up the VLT.

Configuring VLANs using 802.1Q and VLT
We use ISL in the core of the network between the larger Cisco switches - the fact that it has a distinct spanning tree incarnation for each VLAN is an advantage in a mesh of connections; 802.1Q forces all VLANs to use the same spanning tree topology.
We use VLT between older 3Coms at the edge of the network and newer ones connecting to the core.
VLT allows for only 16 VLANs and they are known only as VLANs 1-16.

Software Engineering Practices for the ESO VLT Programme
In 1991 when the VLT development began, the question was whether a traditional, basically no-rules approach would suffice, or whether a more structured software engineering approach was needed for a project of its size and characteristics.
VLT Common Software was defined to collect software solutions that could be used across the project.
For the VLT we used the traditional waterfall model (sequence of phases: requirement, analysis, design, implementation, test, etc.) in an ``incremental'' way, i.e., identical sequences were started at different times for the different parts of the project.

The main components of the VLT Archive System are (see figure 1): the On-Line Archive Facility (OLAF) and the off-line Science Archive Facility (SAF).
Already after the first year of UT1 operations, the VLT will be delivering data quantities that make it not feasible to follow the same procedure for archive research.

Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer.
Dubbed the Very Large Telescope (VLT), the European Southern Observatory (ESO) is building four 8.2-meter mirrors in Chile which together will act as a single telescope with a mirror diameter of over 16-meters.
The first of these telescopes should be completed in 1997, and all four should be completed and working together sometime in the year 2000.

This new high-contrast adaptive optics camera, the NACO Simultaneous Differential Imager, or NACO SDI [2], was specifically developed by Laird Close and Rainer Lenzen (Max-Planck-Institute for Astronomy in Heidelberg, Germany) for hunting extrasolar planets.
The SDI camera enhances the ability of the VLT and its adaptive optics system to detect faint companions that would normally be lost in the glare of the primary star.
Using NACO on the VLT, the astronomers further observed AB Dor C at near infrared wavelengths to measure its temperature and luminosity.
