VMEbus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
VMEbus is a computer bus standard originally developed for the Motorola 68000 line of CPUs, but later widely used for many applications and standardized by the IEC as ANSI/IEEE 1014-1987.
At this point a number of other companies involved in the 68000's ecosystem agreed to use the standard, including Signetics, Philips, Thompson, and Mostek, and soon it was being officially standardized by the IEC as ANSI/IEEE 1014-1987.
VMEbus was also used to develop a closely related standard, VXIbus.

 comp.arch.bus.vmebus Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
VMEbus boards have data bus sizes of 16, 32 or 64 bits and are designed to be plugged into a backplane that has up to 21 slots for other boards.
The VMEbus specification specifies the physical dimensions of the boards, backplane and the chassis as well as the electrical specifications of the bus and various communication protocols.
Reasons why the VMEbus and the VXIbus specifications are not totally compatible include: 1) conflicts may arise depending on the use of the A and C rows on P2.

If the system controller is configured to issue a VMEbus reset during adapter initialization, and other processor modules are installed in the VMEbus backplane, boot the system controller first to allow devices and processor modules to perform their bus reset actions.
Other VME adapters on the VMEbus may accept VMEbus resets and attempt to reconfigure the VMEbus adapter to the hardware context it was running before the bus reset occurred.
You must boot the VMEbus system controller for the VMEbus crate (set by the appropriate jumper on the module) before any other node that is participating in the VB backplane or any other node that is using the VMEbus.

 VMEbus for Software Engineers
All VMEbus boards plug into the VMEbus backplane, all of which is housed in a chassis or "cage." The connectors in the backplane are connected, from one slot to the next, according to the specification.
The maximum number of boards that can be plugged into a VMEbus backplane is a function of the width set aside for each board in the specification, the operating speed of the signaling, and the settling-time requirements and bus terminations.
Other features commonly found on VMEbus boards include a selection of various types of Bus Release capabilities and data alignment issues (which are not a consideration of VMEbus but rather of some CPU chips).
