VMware - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
VMware Inc. refers to the computer and operating-system instance that executes the VMware Workstation process as the host machine, and identifies instances of operating systems (or of virtual appliances) running inside a virtual machine as guest virtual machines.
In VMware's case, the translated code is put into a spare area of memory, typically at the end of the address space, which can then be protected and made invisible using the segmentation mechanisms.
Although VMware virtual machines run in user mode, VMware Workstation itself requires installing various drivers in the host operating system, notably in order to dynamically switch the GDT and the IDT tables.

VMware supports several different disk models for guest operating systems, including running the virtual machine in a separate partition from the host operating system, and creating virtual disks in the file system space of the host operating system.
Note that VMware allocates the virtual disks in approximately 2GB increments and that these virtual disks are not allocated at their full size; the virtual disks will expand as files are created in the virtual machine.
