Amsterdam's ships sailed the seven seas; the local warehouses were brimful of commodities from the four corners of the earth.
The core of Amsterdam’s historic buildings was built during the Golden age: the Zuiderkerk (1603-1611), the Noorderkerk (1620-1623) and the Westerkerk (1620-1631) as well as the town hall (now Royal Palace) in the Dam Square (1648-1655).
Moreover, Amsterdam’s outward appearance was largely determined by its many spires: the Westertoren (1638) and the decorative spires built by Hendrick de Keyser such as the Montelbaanstoren (1606) and the Munttoren (1620).

The ship was built according to standard VOC specifications for her class, with a length over the verticals of 150 ft and a beam of 40 ft. Her cargo capacity was registered as 250 lasten: the last being approximately equal to 2 tons or 2000 kg.
The ship carried an armament of 40 guns, made up of 10 iron 12-pounders, 2 bronze 8-pounders, 18 iron 8-pounders, and 10 smaller guns (the latter including bassen, small breech-loading swivel guns).The two bronze 8-pounders were probably the pair of guns mounted under the half-deck nearest the compasses, common VOC practice to reduce deviation.
The ship left Amsterdam in late October 1711 and negotiated the shoal waters of the Zuider Zee to Texel, where-as was customary-she took on the bulk of her heavy cargo and stores.

In 1640 the VOC captured the port of Galle, in Sri Lanka from the Portuguese and broke the latter's monopoly of the cinnamon trade.
VOC outposts were also established in Persia (now Iran), Bengal (now Bangladesh and part of India), Malacca (Melaka, now in Malaysia), Siam (now Thailand), mainland China (Canton), Formosa (now Taiwan) and southern India.

The AMSTERDAM was to set sail on 15 November 1748 from Texel and sail to Batavia.
The ship, captained by a man named Willem Klump, carried 203 crew, 127 soldiers to be stationed at garrisons at Cape town and Batavia, and five passengers.
A couple of attempts were made to salvage the artifacts from the ship over time but little was recovered until 1969 when a contracting firm came across it during the construction of a new sewer.
