When the VR6 engine was announced my original goal was to drop one in an 82 Scirocco but I was intimidated when I found out about the mounting difficulties that would be involved due to the lack of a sub-frame in the A1 cars.

VR6 could be as narrow as 15° without cylinders overlapping is because adjacent cylinders are widely spaced from each other, as seen in the following pictures.
When the whole world is fascinating with 4-valve engines, Volkswagen’s VR engine (both VR6 and V5) still relies on sohc 2-valve head until the arrival of the second generation VR6 in July 1999.
If you still remember, a feature of VR6 is that it is asymmetric, this enable the exhaust valves in both bank remains in a distance accessible by a common camshaft.

 VR6
By using the narrow 15° VR6 engine, it was possible to install a six-cylinder engine in existing Volkswagen models.
In 1997, VW removed a cylinder from the VR6, creating the VR5, the first block to use an uneven number of cylinders in a V design.
The 3.2 is now used as a range-topper in Audi A3 or as an entry level version in the VW Touareg and Porsche Cayenne, although the version used in the Cayenne features modifications to the heads as well as the intake and timing systems.

Volkswagen GTI VR6 or 1.8T - Tech Letters - European Car Magazine
Jay, the 98 Jetta VR6 is a great car to modify, and responds very well to suspension modifications, as long as they were designed specifically for that car.
The VR6 engine as you know was not designed from the factory for a supercharger or turbocharger, so the fact that the head gasket may fail if either of these is used is a consideration.
Supercharger systems for the VR6, such as the one from VF-engineering (www.vf-engineering.com) tend to run fixed boost levels and are designed to run with the stock head gasket and compression.

 Halfbakery: "True" VR6 Engine
Volkswagen makes an engine it calls the VR6 (see link), which is really just a V6 with 15 degrees between the "banks" so that it can have a single block and head, as well as a compact size, because the cylinders can nest together.
The VR6 is closer to an I6 than a V6.
As you say, this is very like the square four used on bikes, notably the Ariel, but is also similar in concept to the H16 engine used in BRM racing cars in the 60s.

 Volksagen Jetta VR6 and turbo
The VR6 combines a 2.8 liter V6 engine, which pushes the Jetta to 60 mph in just over seven seconds with a tight suspension that provides excellent handling.
On higher models, such as our VR6, an anti-slip regulation system and electronic differential lock use electronics to control throttle response or use the brakes to prevent wheels from slipping.
This system proved to be invaluable for handling the power of the little six, and in fact was used every time we pulled away rapidly from a stop, which is both good and bad.

Usually the rear subframe comes right out and I've never had such a struggle removing the frame horn bolts as I did on this car, the upper right bolt was too tight for even my impact gun and ultimately required a breaker bar and a lot of bolt buster soaking.
The VR6 subframe was attached to the new control arms and the sway bar was also attached.

The VW VR6 power plant is a charmer and now boasts a healthy 200 horsepower and 195 lb.-ft. of torque.
The seats lift up and forward to allow easy ingress and egress for rear occupants, but as space can be a little tight in such designs, the rear compartment is best reserved for diminutive adults or children.

2001 VW Jetta Wagon   (Site not responding. Last check: )
It doesn't make a lot of power for its displacement by modern standards, and it sips more fuel than you might think (expect mpg figures in the low 20s overall and high teens in stop-and-go), but its unmatched smoothness and velvety purr manage to seduce the driver into forgetting about the numbers.
The shift action of the five-speed manual transmission with the VR6 felt smoother and less notchy than in the sedan equipped with the 1.8T engine, although the gear ratios were too tall.
For 2002 models, VW is changing its warranty coverage to four years/50,000 miles for the whole vehicle and five years/60,000 miles for the powertrain warranty, which is now transferable to second owners.

 Back Room: VW Golf VR6 - Big-end
I don't know if this applies to the VR6 but I've heard that it is so with BMW engines.
If the big-ends are loose enough to cause knocking there should also be a significant drop in oil pressure as the oil escapes through the gap and into the sump.
If you were to replace the bearing, depending on the garage you use, it might cost a few hundred pounds, but I’m not really an expert so couldn't say how long this would take.

 1.8T or Vr6? - VWFixx.com Forums
In the end the VR6 has more potential, and out of the bow its a better engine, there is just a slight midrange where the 1.8 has the advantage because it comes turbo'ed, so it takes well to mods right off the bat.
The VR6 is original, and has more final potential than the 1.8t its that simple.
It just seemed to respond better (obviously mods) and i figured the VR6 was $3000 more that i had to finance which meant higher payments, in turn less money for me to mod my car.

In stock form, the VR6 is quick off the mark thanks to the variable intake, but looses accleration at high rpms, making it an ideal candidate for centrifugal supercharging.
All test cars were put through long term full throttle testing in conditions varying from wet cold climates to hot dry Arizona desert temperature for safe-optimal air fuel ratios and knock activity monitoring.
