VR6 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The VR6 engine was introduced in Europe in 1991 in the Passat Corrado, although it was it was 1992 before the engine appeared in North American models.
For example, two VR6 engines mated together at 72 degrees result in a W12 configuration, which is significantly shorter than a V12 engine but only marginally wider.
In addition, the VR6 is able to use the firing interval of an Inline-6 engine.

HUGE article on converting A2 Golf/Jetta to VR6!
When the VR6 engine was set in the A2 engine bay on the GLX subframe the right side of the engine was higher than the left with a slight interference with the hood.
VWs with VR6 engines built after 1993 use R134a and a variable displacement compressor driven by a serpentine belt system for the a/c.
The VR6 upper strut bearings from the GLX were used by replacing the upper spring seat plates with ones from a VR6 powered Corrado VW PN 1H0 412 341.

Personally i love the g60 just as much as the vr6 even though i drive the vr6 and im sure most of the vr6 vs. g60 fights are all in fun and games.
Of course, if you are filthy rich, the VR6 engine will have a higher potential output.
I personally like the vr6 because of its raw power out of the box and the awesome GROWL of that beautiful engine.

For the European Corrado and Golf VR6 Syncro, the engine is bumped up in displacement to 2.9 liters, and has a slightly different throttle body.
The North American VR6 and some European versions are essentially the same engine, but there are a few minor differences.
The VSR manifold (described below) was originally intended for production but fell victim to the red pen, most likely for cost reasons.

When the whole world is fascinating with 4-valve engines, Volkswagen& VR engine (both VR6 and V5) still relies on sohc 2-valve head until the arrival of the second generation VR6 in July 1999.
The first generation VR6 has 2 valves per cylinder, single overhead camshaft (sohc) serving each bank just like any conventional 2-valve V6s, although the 2 camshafts are so close that they look as if a twin-cam design.

On higher models, such as our VR6, an anti-slip regulation system and electronic differential lock use electronics to control throttle response or use the brakes to prevent wheels from slipping.

 2005 Volkswagen GTI VR6 Road Test - Roadtests - Auto123.com - Canadian automotive network
The 2005 model comes available with two engines, including a tidy 1.8-litre four-cylinder turbo producing 180 horses, and the legendary narrow-angle VR6, a lightweight 2.8-litre six-banger pumping out 200 ponies.
The 1.8T is mated to a manual five-speed, while the VR6 comes with a manual six-speed.
The GTI's larger four-door stablemate, the Jetta, is a rocket with this engine, so when the six-cylinder is strapped inside the hatchback, the ride is nothing short of wild.

The time and effort spent on modifying an old VR6 is far grater then swapping the engines.
If you could find a wrecked 24v VR6 (like the back of the car is crushed), and it is cheap, then it could be a good idea.

Straight engine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Some manufacturers (originally Lancia, and more recently Volkswagen with the VR6) have attempted to combine advantages of the straight and V configurations by producing a narrow-angle V; this is more compact than either configuration, but is less smooth (without balancing) than either.
A straight engine is considerably easier to build than an otherwise equivalent horizontally opposed or V engine because the cylinder bank can be milled from a single metal casting and it requires fewer cylinder heads and camshafts.
Straight configurations are simpler than their V-shaped counterparts and usually provide smoother running, but at the cost of greater engine length.

 W8
Volkswagen Group currently produces a W8 engine, based on its W12 which uses two narrow-angle VR6 engines.
Encyclopedia : W: W8: W8: W8 is an 8-cylinder piston engine consisting of four banks of two cylinders, or two juxtaposed V4 engine blocks, coupled to one crankshaft.
The narrow angle of each set of cylinders allows just two camshafts to drive each pair of banks, so just four are needed in total.

I would be reluctant to use a B4 spec oil in an older petrol engine, but then I wouldn't want to waste my money on fully synth in an older petrol engine, so not really an issue.
I agree, it will probably clean the inside of the engine out, and so long as the engine is not caked up with carbon and muck, it will do little harm.
To also be rated as A3 indicates that this is perfectly acceptable for modern petrol engines also.

VWvortex Forums: which engine would you rather have in your gti?
It is a 90 degree V. It is not an engine that would fit in a transverse layout.
It could even be turned towards the rear of the car on the transverse axis and set back behind the shock towers, offsetting some of the steering/plowing/weight problems on the current VR6 cars.
It wouldn't retrofit into anything now but could be easily engineered to fit in the forthcoming generation of VW's.

Speed has nothing to do with it - hell, you could import a 350 mph, 5000 hp car into the U.S. and take it on the road if it passed the tests.

 Articles - Straight engine
A straight engine is considerably easier to build than an otherwise equivalent horizontally opposed or V engine because the cylinder bank can be milled from a single metal casting and it requires fewer cylinder heads and camshafts.
Usually found in 4 and 6 cylinder configurations, the straight engine (often designed as inline engine) is an internal-combustion engine with all cylinders aligned in one row, with no or only minimal offset.
Straight configurations are simpler than their V-shaped counterparts and usually provide smoother running, but at the cost of greater engine length.
