Topic: VRML

VRML - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
VRML is a text file format where, e.g., vertices and edges for a 3D polygon can be specified along with the surface color, image-mapped textures, shininess, transparency, and so on.
The term VRML was coined by Dave Raggett in a paper submitted to The First International Conference on the World-Wide Web in 1994, and first discussed at the WWW94 VRML BOF established by Tim Berners-Lee, where Mark Pesce presented the Labyrinth demo he developed with Tony Parisi and Peter Kennard.
VRML reached the height of its popularity after the release of VRML2 in 1997, when it was used on some personal homepages and sites such as CyberTown, which offered 3D chats.

Virtual Reality Modelling Language (VRML) in Chemistry
VRML, as a modelling language, is currently less suited for semantic expression, and hence for operations such as indexing.
VRML is therefore complementary to a markup language since it defines a quite different set of primitive and importantly three-dimensional objects which can be used to express complex chemical models in a visual manner.

VRML 1.0 files describe geometry, the material properties associated with that geometry, and the placement of that geometry with respect to other geometry, all within a single virtual world.
VRML 1.0 browsers allow end-users to navigate within a VRML world, to "pick" objects by using their mouse, to choose among viewpoints defined within the scene graph via menus, and other housekeeping tasks (such as loading a world).
VRML 2.0's runtime semantics, specifically the ability to retarget routes to other fields and the ability to access all the descendants of a "referenced" VRML 2.0 object, require that the same structure as specified in the VRML 2.0 file exist within the runtime environment.

VRML uses text descriptions to define the concept of nodes, which describe the shape, properties, or logical grouping of three-dimensional objects.
The VRML code is grouped hierarchically within braces and uses constructs called Separator nodes (which are usually used to logically group nodes that share common attributes).

 VRML for Beginners
VRML differs from HTML in that it gives the browser instructions about where objects go and what color they are and then basically lets the browser "connect the dots." HTML, on the other hand, simply pieces together text and a number of different, pre-existing image files to form a 2-D page.
VRML viewing is also very taxing on your computer's resources, so a fast computer (e.g., 486/66 minimum) with more RAM (8 MB minimum) and a fast video card (16-bit or better) will greatly improve your virtual experience.
At Aereal's Instant VRML Home World, for instance, you can input text and have it generated in 3-D. Your creation is then stored on Aereal's server, and you can link to it from from your home page/Web site.
