 Beyond3D - Which was nice.
The SLI acronym, although getting the message across, wasn't entirely accurate as far as VSA-100 based products were concerned as it no longer relied purely on single Scan-Lines.
It wasn't until their next chip, VSA-100, did "SLI" crop up again, although this time not as a multi-board solution but a single board with multiple chips.
VSA-100 could scale to 32 processors within a single rendering system, although for the PC only 1 (Voodoo4), 2 (Voodoo5 5500) and 4 chip (Voodoo5 6000) boards were planned, although the 4 chip implementation never made into retail availability due to power and AGP bridging issues.

 SystemLogic.net - 3dfx Voodoo5 5500 AGP Review
The other thing is the entirely new VSA-100 chip, contrary to some popular belief, the VSA-100 is not an upgraded Voodoo3 chip, it's been entirely redesigned to be able to support many new features… especially T-Buffer, FSAA, SLI, etc… Did I mention it's also a heck of a lot faster?
It is something that a gamer shouldn't play without after being experienced first hand.
Some of you might be thinking that 640x480 with FSAA is the best it gets but that's not true.

 Retro-test : Voodoo 5 6000
Instead to use one VSA-100, why couldn't we use 2 of them?
Because they couldn't follow ATI or nVidia in the performance domain with a single chip solution, 3dfx used it's SLI technology with the latest graphic processor, the VSA-100.
Starting with the Voodoo 3, 3dfx accumulated delays in the performance and technological domain compared to it's direct competitors and this was the beginning of the end...on 14th December 2000 3dfx was bought by nVidia.

 [H]ardOCP - ATi Radeon Review
There are some games that look simply stunning with awesome FSAA (ala 3dfx VSA-100).
The 3dfx "jittered method" of FSAA is probably the best method I've seen of implementing FSAA, but the Radeon does a pretty good job of implementing FSAA as well.
At higher resolutions, there is a significant draw on the card itself, making FSAA at or over 1024 x 768 not very feasible.

VolariGamers :: View topic - Some XG45 info
Because that is crap for dealing with the uneven load that is typical of modern graphics?Even 3dfx gave that up in the vsa-100 line.NV also has SFR, which helps where AFR breaks-I don`t think that XGI can do that.
But they relaxed the scan height not because of "the nature of multi chips on single board", but because of image filtering.
Perhaps I worded the first part wrongly-it`s bad because the process was used post the RAMDAC stage with analogue data, any slight timing issues being noticeable as the odd and even lines could be slightly out of sync.

 NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GTX 7800 GT 7600 7300 6800 ATI Radeon X1900 XTX X1800 XT X1600 X1300 X850 - MVKTech
The Voodoo 5 5500 contained two VSA 100 graphics cores on one board connected via SLI (Scan Line Interleave).
3dfx's SLI stood for Scan Line Interleave and operated by having one card (or one chip) render the odd number of lines on the screen, while the other card (or chip) rendered the even number of lines on the screen.
The only likeness they share is the idea of increasing performance using multiple video cards, and the fact that the name for the technology can be made into the same acronym.

Earlier versions of this driver were "leaked" out onto the 'net in the beginning of March, quite interestingly close to 3dfx's VSA-100 announcement.
The upshot of this is that the 5.16 drivers are not public, but they do represent what NVidia believes to be the best drivers for the GTS right now.
That doesn't make a lot of sense to me, as as much as I like a good yarn, I'd guess that the driver was leaked externally.

After months of delay, 3dfx is finally about to release its next generation products, the VSA-100 multi-chip based Voodoo 4 and Voodoo 5.
3dfx is enhancing the “visual experience” by using a feature that it calls the T-buffer--technology borrowed from high-end graphics workstations--to accomplish this.  Essentially each frame is rendered multiple times to the “T-Buffer”--each time with slight variations--where they are recombined to produce effects such as anti-aliasing, motion blue, depth of field and soft shadows.

Accelerate Your Mac! - 3dfx Mac VSA100 Next Generation Graphics Cards Press release
Below is a summary of comments and replies to my questions including great news on DVD and Quicktime support with their recently announced VSA-100 chip based Mac retail cards.
In August 1999, 3dfx introduced the first version of its beta drivers for the Voodoo3 to the Mac development community in order to enable leading game developers to create Mac versions of their best-selling WindowsÆ PC games, and to attract more cutting-edge 3D titles to the Mac platform.
3dfx and Creative are two of the best known names in the PC world - their support of the Mac will not go unnoticed by other companies that may also jump on the Mac bandwagon.

The Voodoo 1 & 2 drivers were built on top of Glide2, which was only full screen.
