VTEC - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
VTEC (standing for Variable valve Timing and lift Electronic Control) is a system developed by Honda to improve the combustion efficiency of its internal combustion engines throughout the RPM range.
VTEC is the result of an effort to marry high RPM performance with low RPM stability.
Drivability is a concern for some who are wary of the fact that the VTEC may activate in the middle of an aggressive corner, potentially upsetting the stability and throttle response of the bike.

 VTEC
The VTEC system used in most Civics (EX, Si and the del Sol Si but NOT del Sol VTEC) is a little closer to that in the NSX, etc. The difference being that this system is vastly simplified and operates on the intake valves ONLY.
The VTEC is equipped with multiple cam lobes per cylinder, providing one valve timing and valve lift profile at low speed and a different profile at high speed.
VTEC factoid-of-the-week: Valve timing change conditions that must be met include 5 km/h (3 mph) or faster and 60 degrees C (140 deg F) or faster.

VTEC is the premium resin for polyimide-based glass fabric prepreg laminates for demanding printed circuit board applications where high temperature stability and fabrication ease are paramount.
At 400°C, VTEC outwears Vespel SP-21 by a factor of 5 to 1.
VTEC's dimensional stability is outstanding — 0% change after 24 hrs at 500°F — and VTEC Polyimide's compressive strength is about 20% higher than established standards for polyimide materials, adding a extra measure of safety.

VTEC rod bolts are also beefier, boasting 1mm-larger diameters as opposed to the LS's dinky 8mm bolts.
Normally, on a VTEC engine, oil is fed to the VTEC pressure switch by an orifice on the deck of the cylinder head matching up with a corresponding hole on the deck of the block.
The obvious difference between the VTEC distributor on the right and the LS distributor on the left is the bolt pattern.

Hyper-VTEC or Economy VTEC - Sportbike Review - Sport Rider
In general, VTEC enhances an engine's performance, fuel economy and emissions by controlling the valves differently at low and high rpm.
An enhancement of VTEC used on the Civic HX and the hybrid Insight (dubbed VTEC-E for efficiency, economy and ecology) is closer to the Interceptor's arrangement, but still utilizes rockers.
The trouble with grafting these automotive-style VTECs on a bike like the VFR is that bikes have long since outgrown rockers, and the size penalty for extra lobes would be too great given Honda's goals for the 2002 Interceptor.

VTEC, as most of us know, was a way to attack the compromise of low end power vs. high end power.
There was skepticism about all the small parts involved in the VTEC engine and most manufacturers believed Honda's new engines were going to be full of problems down the road with errors occurring during the VTEC engagement process.
However it turned out to be quite the opposite as DOHC VTEC engines have proved to be some of the most reliable engines ever built because of their precision.

If you have read How Car Engines Work, you know about the valves that let air into the engine and let exhaust out of the engine.
If you put in a good low-speed camshaft, it hurts the engine's performance at high speeds, and if you put in a good high-speed camshaft it hurts the engine's performance at low speeds (and in extreme cases can make it very hard to start the engine!).

The Ls block does not have a Vtec oil passage (you need this hole to produce the oil pressure to lock the vtec lobes rocker arm) so you will need to tap the hole on the head or weld it shut.
The oil pumps on the ls's suck so you might want to upgrade to a vtec one or a b20 as they are same part number as the gsr.
Any 1.6 b-series piston will be raised by about one full point in the ls block like the b16a(pr3 pistons will raise it from the stock 10.2 comp in the b16a to 11.2ish in the ls block so keep this in mind when building the ls block.
