  Stereo VU Meter
We compared a LED level meter using the chip with our unit and the difference was negligible.
The 470R resistor in series with the pot is only needed when the VU Meter is connected directly across speaker lines.
To test the stereo VU meter, connect the two links as shown on the board and connect the dynamic microphone (speaker).

  VU Meters
The VU meter is amongst the simplest of meter designs and have been used since the very beginnings of the broadcast, recording and live audio industries.
VU meters tend to be used in order to cut costs where there is a requirement for a large number of meters, or where the meter needs only to provide an indication that sound is reaching a particular channel, such as on large mixing desks or multi-track recorders.
A VU meter is particularly useful when setting the gain structure at soundcheck, as again like our ears, desks and other equipment tend to recognise average values, and within reason, tend to ignore the peaks.

VU meter   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
meter is designed to provide a reasonable way to estimate the loudness of a signal.
A VU meter is not recommended as the sole metering method for digital systems - it is too slow to catch transients which may overload the system.
The sluggish nature of the VU can be a benefit as a peak recording may cause the engineer to be too cautious in the level set as some transients cause very little distortion.

 VU And PPM Audio Metering
VU (Volume Unit) meters used to be the mainstay of audio metering systems, but they have been replaced by LED metering in a great many mixers and other applications.
The Peak Programme Meter (PPM) was originally developed by the BBC to overcome the shortcomings of the VU meter, which is notoriously bad at showing the peak signal level.
Very few so-called VU meters come even close to the specification, and the little units on tape machines and sometimes provided on power amplifiers generally bear no resemblance to a real VU meter except that the meter dial is divided into the proper number of divisions, and has a red section from 0VU to +3VU.

This difference between the reading of a VU meter and a PPM is known as the crest factor.
As the VU meter displays an average volume of the audio signal, it must "sample" the audio signal over a longer time period than the PPM.
For example, when the VU meter of a Shure FP mixer reads "0", the PPM on a Sony Beta Cam with a "+12" full scale reading should be set to read at "-8".

Proper VU meter available? (not simple peak) - DriverHeaven.net
A proper VU meter will show 0 VU at something like -12dB sine wave, and is used for estimating "loudness" of signals (usually found in broadcast or tape recorders).
What I figured was to have a "calibrate" slider/control on the VU meter effect/plugin to account for level changes, and calibrate by playing back a sine wave of appropriate amplitude in whatever editing software you use and adjusting the VU meter to read zero.
You can't properly account for the effect of filter/eq so the VU meter would have to be connected as directly as possible to the wave playback source (FXbus?), not at the epilog.

Meters are designed to have standardized response characteristics usually referred to as meter ballistics.
The response of a VU meter is that of an averaging type meter.
Remember that meters are not some kind of empirical standard to be blindly adhered to but rather a reference to use as a guide the same way you use a speedometer or ruler.

The sound recordest is using the VU meters for showmanship.
This is because the VU meter is logarithmic, and most of the scale is compressed at the left side.
The trick is to set the line up tone level with the VU meter on the mixer at 0 dBm, and set the level on the peak meter on the camera, or recorder at -6 dBm.

There are two general types of meter ballistics (ballistics refers to how the meter responds to changes in the audio signal) used in audio equipment, and many different displays used.
The VU meter measures average sound intensity and uses the volume unit as itÕs unit of measure.
The VU meter does not show us everything that is going on in the circuit, it shows us only the average.

The idea behind a VU Meter is simple, it takes an audio signal (such as a home stereo, or PA systems Line Out) as it's source, then displays this information by lighting a chain of LED's.

Linear meter would have been easy to make, but a real VU meter has to be logarithmic.
That way when a short peak comes into the meter it will be viewed on the LED bar and because the first capacitor is discharged completely quite often, the silence after a peak will be viewed correctly.
You can make the meter as long as you wish bu cutting that table as desired and adjust the lowermost resistors so that the resistor chain's lower end is in the right voltage.

I decided to use a mono VU meter and double up the outputs rather than a stereo meter for a number of reasons.

 Meter Matters
IN MY VU The classic needle-based VU meter was introduced more than 60 years ago, in part as a visual reference for radio announcers to check that their speaking volume hovered at the optimum level for broadcast (see Fig.
VU stands for volume unit, and a level of 0 VU is calibrated to correspond to a specific input or output voltage.
If you're accustomed to peak meters, you may be surprised to find that the perceived loudness (as represented by the RMS level) is more than 15 dB lower than the peak value at the loudest part of the recording.

 USING METERS IN RECORDING
The VU meter also tries to simulate how the ear hears volume, having its "ballistics" (how fast it rises and falls) simulate the time it takes the ear to respond to sound.
The best meters are the meters that have needles that rise and fall, because you can read subtle changes in level that wouldn't cause change in which "bar" was lit in a led meter.
When listening to different mixes, listen to copies that have been "leveled." Run your mixes though a VU meter and record them, one after another, at a level where there are the same for every mix.

Unfortunately conventional VU meters, both analog and digital, are completely inaccessible to those without sight.

The gain of the buffer stage is adjustable via a small trimmer pot and is used to calibrate the VU meter so that the motor triggers at approximately 0 VU.

Correct meter settings can help a lot especially when you have digital peak meters and analog VU meters to look at.
Secret: VU meters were designed around analog tape recordings, where there is really 14 dB of invisible headroom above 0VU that is not displayed on the meters.
This is why RMS VU meters are a good tool to have (at least) for your stereo mixes.

Other levels may be described in reference to it; for instance, 0 VU is +4 dbm and represents a voltage level of 1.228 volts.
