  VW HISTORY
Two years after the 2.0-litre 8-valve GTI failed to impress anyone greatly, Volkswagen decided that what the world needed was another 16-valve version, which was launched in January 1993.
VW tried to sex it up a bit with a 1272cc, 55 bhp lump in Sep '83, but even calling it Coupe S, sticking four lights on grille, a rev counter, sports seats and steering wheel, couldn't hide the fact that this was another slow old slug.
GTIs mirrored the spec of its hatchbacked cousin with a 110 bhp fuel injected 1.6, close ratio 'box with uprated suspension and rear anti-roll bar.

 History of the Volkswagen GTI
The first GTI was quite nibble, because of its light weight, and the 1.8l 8v 90 hp engine supplied plenty of power for the car.
The Rabbit GTI is the lightest of all GTI's, weighing in at 1850 lbs.
By the way, the fastest VW of all time was the 1992 Corrado SLC, which has the same 172 hp engine, but was based on the A2 chassis, and therefore a hell of a lot lighter than the A3's.

CanadianDriver: First Drive - 2006 Volkswagen Golf GTI
That doesn't mean that older GTIs were in any way poor efforts (I bought a new one myself once and loved it) but the new car is way ahead in terms of feel, stability and general dynamic capability, as we'll see.
A VR6 V-6 GTI was launched and it generated enough torque-steer to require a ride-along chiropractor.
According to VW, this is one of few engines built anywhere that uses a powerful combination of homogenous direct fuel injection and exhaust turbo with intercooler.

VW GTI - 2006 Volkswagen GTI Road Test Review
VW claims a 0-60 time of 6.8 seconds, top speed is governed at 130 mph.
To their credit, VW not only recognized that recent GTIs had lost their edge, they used it as motivation to help sharpen the fifth generation models and get back on track.
GTI Mark V is sporty and sensible, with some serious attitude—just like it used to be.

VW has simplified the GTI choices, eliminating GLS and GLX trim levels and offering instead the 1.8T with manual, the 1.8T with five-speed Porsche Tiptronic automatic and the VR6 with manual.
VW took back the car for several days, relubricated the door seals, tweaked some other areas and handed it back.
If the GTI test car was representative — and it doesn't seem so, judging from comments on GTI chat sites and reviews of the vehicle elsewhere — you want no part of it whatsoever at any price.

2006 VW Golf GTI MK-V Review
Then in 1983, seemingly out of nowhere, VW introduced the GTI – a Rabbit with enough horsepower to leave everything else in its wake, handling tweaks to make the already nimble little car even more so, and just enough sexy trim so anyone who knew anything about cars knew that it was cool.
My nephew, on the other hand, was driving an original 83 GTI at the time and, while he spent a great deal of time under the hood, it served him well in spite of his tendency to flip it up on its side occasionally.
The sporty stance and styling is distinctively VW and its connection with the past GTI is apparent.

VW Driving: VW GTI 1.8T and VR6
Available in both a 1.8T or the monsterous VR6, the GTI is loved by daily commuters and Larry Leadfooters alike.
The term VR6 is a hybrid of the word "VEE" and the German word "Reihenmotor," which loosely translates to inline V. VW engineers retained the single cylinder head, excellent balancing and narrow width of a traditional inline 6-cylinder and merged the compactness of a conventional V6 to produce the VR6.
A sense of automotive history is apparent in its preserved simplicity -- an artifact of a bygone era, yet the innovative machinery under the hood is a reminder of what automotive engineering can achieve with a little vision, a need for power and some midnight oil.

Volkswagen Golf - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
VW purists in America and company executives in Germany were displeased, and for the 1983 model year the Pennsylvania plant went back to using stiffer shocks and suspension with higher-quality interior trim.
The GTI version, launched in Europe in 1976 and in the U.S. in 1983, virtually created the hot hatch genre overnight, and many other manufacturers since have created special sports models of their regular volume-selling small hatchbacks.
The Golf 5 GTI is hailed as a return-to-form for the progenitor of the genre.

The GTI's interior has an upscale, luxurious look and feel to it, while the Mazdaspeed3's cabin is fitted with a variety of fl plastic pieces that don't equal the GTI's trim in terms of quality.
Yes, the VW has the nicer interior, but its reliability will be lower and its operating costs after the warranty expires will be much higher.
Having worked at a VW dealership for a year I can honestly say that new VW's simply are not on par with previous generations.

I have always been a fan of VW GTI's and probably would of bought a 1.8 GTI but my experience with VW dealers in Miami, Atlanta, and Maine made me realize I would hate having to deal with them for service, let alone trying to buy one.
That's basically why I went with the SVT over the GTI, the buying experience was just a lot better, I have had repeatable miserable experiences in trying to buy VW's over the years that I went with another brand.

It would be pretty difficult to make a 16v A2 GTI nationally competitive in DSP (understatement of the year?) but DSP is a good fit regionally unless one of the national hotshoes lives nearby.
The A2 VW chassis is a great platform, there's just no where for it to really play fairly in SCCA (regional STS would be a decent playground).

The GTi badge sits a little apologetically on the rump but huge alloys and wide super low profile rubber band tyres shout loudly at you in a max power kind of way.
Very early models were criticised for their brakes but that was long since solved and big brakes backed up by modern ABS means that, like most modern cars, stopping power at least matches up to the going power.
Central locking, deadlocks and the usual modern anti-theft gear mean that the GTi should stay in your possession much longer than many of the originals managed to.
