Depending on the advice of the elementary school and the score of the CITO test, pupils are assigned to either VMBO, HAVO, VWO or Gymnasium.
The VWO (Voorbereidend Wetenschappelijk Onderwijs, literally, "preparatory scientific education") has six grades and is attended from age twelve to eighteen.
A Gymnasium programme is similar to the VWO, except that Latin and Greek are typically compulsory until the third year.
Of these, vwo, with the longest and most difficult programme, is the only type of secondary education that prepares pupils for university entrance.
In all vwo programmes, the last 2 years are mainly devoted to the study of the examination subjects.
In the United Kingdom, universities and polytechnics normally accept the vwo diploma for admission to degree programmes and therefore as equivalent to overall GCE A-level standard.
VWO certificates qualify pupils to enter university or higher professional education.
The national examination for each subject in HAVO and VWO is the same for all schools and is taken at the time specified by the government.
The final grade for each subject is the arithmetic mean of the mark for the internal examination and the mark for the national examination in that subject.
Students go on to the VWO or choose senior secondary vocational training instead of higher professional education.
An important result of the recent educational reforms regarding VMBO, HAVO and VWO is that pupils in the last two years of VMBO, the last two years of HAVO and the last three years of VWO have to complete the curriculum requirements for one of four subject clusters.
Teachers with Second Level Qualification are qualified to teach the first three years of VWO and HAVO and all age groups in MAVO, VBO and MBO, while those with a First Level Qualification are qualified to teach at all levels of secondary education.
There are around 700 secondary schools in the Netherlands, both publicly and privately run.
All four types of secondary education are for children aged twelve and over and all begin with a period of basic secondary education.
In 1999 all HAVO and VWO schools introduced set subject combinations and the 'study house' construction, which commences in the fourth course year and requires students to acquire skills and knowledge in a much more independent capacity.
Starting with the 1999-2000 school year, a major restructuring of general secondary education was implemented.
Starting with the 1999-2000 school year, MAVO and MBO have been officially classified in the same category of education known as VMBO (Voorbereidend Middelbaar Beroepsonderwijs) or preparatory secondary education.
Beginning in January 1997, a new national qualification framework for adult and vocational education (beroepsonderwijs) went into effect with four levels of training and two learning paths.
The office, known as VWO, is charged with overseeing the Violence The current VWO director, Diane Stuart, would be the obvious and popular choice if the
VWO has come a long way and in this journey we have seen and felt moments that are hard to describe in words.
