VXIbus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The VXIbus architecture is an open standard platform for automated test based upon VMEbus.
VXIbus modules are typically 6U in height (see Eurocard) and C-size (unlike VMEbus modules which are more commonly B-size).
VXIbus is promoted by the VXIbus Consortium, whose sponsor members are (in alphabetical order) Agilent Technologies, Bustec, National Instruments, Racal Instruments, Teradyne, and VXI Technology.

Instead of purchasing a VXIbus chassis and populating it with six or seven full-blown VXIbus boards, you may need only two or three carrier boards loaded with small mezzanine modules.
To most IP and M/MA suppliers, the VXIbus market is still a small part of their business.
Agilent Technologies produces two VXIbus boards, the E1419A multifunction measurement card and the E1413C 64-channel scanning ADC board, both of which accept proprietary mezzanine modules.

Jan 15, 2004 Press Release   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
SAN DIEGO - Janurary 15, 2004,– The VXIbus Consortium today announced the release of a new revision to the VXIbus specification that incorporates the VME64 and 2eVME protocols to dramatically increase the speed and performance options for VXI based systems.
VXIbus has offered users a robust open-architecture test platform with data rates up to 40Mbyte/sec.
While this speed has been sufficient for the vast majority of test and measurement applications, the VMEbus, upon which VXI is based, has continued to evolve to provide higher data rates and remains the fastest major commercial backplane to provide more than 8 slots without external bridges.

Members of the VXIbus Consortium and the VXIplugandplay Systems Alliance have combined their expertise to develop technically sound standards for both hardware and software, bringing the entire industry into a new generation of easy-to-use instrumentation.
Physically, a VXIbus system consists of a mainframe chassis that has the physical mounting and backplane connections for plug-in modules, as shown in Figure 1.
The VXIbus Word Serial Protocol is functionally very similar to the IEEE-488 protocol, which transfers data messages to and from devices one byte (or word) at a time.

The increased width of the C and D sizes are to accommodate thick analogue modules and EMI shielding.
The VXIbus uses the same pin assignments on P1 and the centre P2 pins as the VMEbus.
Reasons why the VMEbus and the VXIbus specifications are not totally compatible include: 1) conflicts may arise depending on the use of the A & C rows on P2.

The VXIbus is a standard instrument control bus that allows high-speed access to test system instrumentation.
VXIbus adds extended triggering capabilities (TTL and ECL trigger line control), mapping (allowing access to register-based and memory-mapped devices), and enhanced interrupt handling.
The high-level interface provides a formatted I/O mechanism that is similar to the C stdio mechanism, except that it is designed specifically for instrument communication and is optimized for IEEE 488.2 compatible instruments.

VXIbus Objectives The goal of the VXIbus is to define a technically sound modular instrument standard based on the VMEbus (IEEE-STD-1014) that is open to all manufacturers and is compatible with present industry standards.
VXIbus is an abbreviation for "VMEbus eXtensions for Instrumentation."
The VXIbus specification details the technical requirements of VXIbus compatible comporients such as mainframes, backpIanes, power supplies and modules.

The VXIbus projects in France, Germany and the UK have come to an agreement on the use of the VXIbus triggerlines (TTL and ECL) and the Local bus lines.
The key to this comfortable VXIbus integration is called VXI Plug and Play and the name is chosen by an Alliance of VXIbus vendors who realized in 1993 that system integration was more difficult than necessary and they came up with the missing link in the form of a set of software standards.
The VXIbus manufacturers have proven with the VXIbus specification (which is nothing more than an extension of the VMEbus specifications) and the Plug and Play enterprise that it is possible to provide the Test and Instrument user with the complete building blocks (hardware and software) for setting up their test systems.

 VXIbus DC Electronic Loads
Model 81201 and 81210 VXIbus DC electronic loads are designed for low-power devices such as DC power supplies which need loads capable of both static and dynamic modes of operation.
Each DC load is a self-contained instrument on a single-slot, C-size VXIbus module making them ideal for applications where tester rack space is limited and a VXIbus card cage is already available.
The 81201 and 81210 DC electronic loads can be integrated into any VXIbus-based test system and have been a standard offering in the 8100i Family of automatic power supply test systems from NH Research.

The VXIbus actually includes two buses; the VXIbus, which is a 32-bit VME-compatible bus with the same 40 MB/s maximum transfer rate; and a local bus.
The advantage of the local bus is that it is designed to off-load the processing of analog or digital data between sets of modules, which, in turn, frees the system-wide VXI bus.
The VXIbus also has better uniform specifications for dealing with RF issues such as EMC/RFI shielding and signal coupling, as well as power and cooling requirements.

The VXIbus specifications encompass fully the VMEbus specifications, IEEE std 1014-1987 and include further a set of specifications in areas which are important for Instrumentation and which are not or not well specified in VMEbus.
If we go one step further and start thinking about the adoption of VXIbus as a standard FEbus, we are still in the VMEbus environment and find at the same time a good number of important HEP issues specified in the VXIbus.
The best compromise would be to adopt the VXIbus standard and stick as close as possible to the standard, in order to profit at maximum rate from developments in the VME/VXIbus environment.
