Facing a losing battle with a neighboring species, the Turei, the Vaadwaur placed themselves into hibernation on their homeworld (the surface of which was subsequently destroyed by heavy Turei orbital bombardment).
In the 24th century, crewmembers from the (additional info and facts about USS Voyager) USS Voyager were attacked by Turei starships and landed on the Vaadwaur homeworld, and the surviving Vaadwaur were awakened from stasis - whereupon they quickly resumed their war with the Turei.
In their early history, the Vaadwaur had encountered many other species, such as the (additional info and facts about Talaxian) Talaxian race.

Details: When Voyager lands on the Vaadwaur planet, Janeway orders the ship to stand down fro Red Alert, but when the first Vaadwaur is beamed to the ship, sickbay (and the corridor outside) are still at Red Alert.
