  Vaclav Brozik - one of the last great painters of historical themes - 19-02-2003 - Radio Prague
Vaclav Brozik was born in 1851 in the village of Zelezny Hamr near Pilsen to a poor family of seven children.
In 1896 Vaclav Brozik was elected one of the "Forty Immortals" of the French Academy and a year later he was raised to peerage by Austro-Hungarian Emperor Franz Josef I. At the end of the nineteenth century, Vaclav Brozik was the most famous Czech artist in Europe.
Vaclav Brozik, a hard-working, passionate and prolific artist, one of the last representatives of European historical painting, died in Paris in 1901, a few weeks after his fiftieth birthday.

In commemoration of these two anniversaries, the National Gallery in Prague opened an extensive exhibition of Mr Brozik's work at the Wallenstein riding school this Friday that is to run until May 4th.
The exhibition also includes the costumes in which Brozik painted his models, some of which can actually be seen in some of the paintings exhibited.
However, he continued to concentrate on historic paintings until the end of the century, despite the fact that they were no longer as popular in most European art centres where modern methods already dominated.

The three Alfons Mucha originals have just been shipped off to Bratislava for a new exhibition, while six Vaclav Brozik paintings are ready to go on loan to the National Gallery for another exhibit.
Clad in fl jeans and a blue sweatshirt, Koci does not fit the stereotype of an overseer of a 5,000-piece collection worth about 50 million Kc ($1.7 million).
Many of the older works were not properly cared for during communism, Koci said, and it was not until the mid-'90s that the company launched a major restoration effort.

Wenzel (Vaclav) von Brozik (1851 Einschichte Hammer near Pilsen - 1901 Paris) was a very well-known Czech artist of the 2nd half of 19th century.
He was born in Bohemia (now Czech Republic), studied at the Academies of Prague, Dresden and later in Paris and soon became one of the most popular historical and genre painters of Europe.
