Vacutainer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Vacutainer® is a trademark of Becton, Dickinson and company for a kind of test tube designed for venipuncture.
The vein is first punctured with the hypodermic needle, which is connected to a translucent plastic holder.
The needle actually has a second, smaller needle, and when a Vacutainer test tube is pushed down into the holder, its rubber cap is pierced.

The ability to infuse heparinized normal saline and to withdraw blood was evaluated by recording the filling time of a 10 ml Vacutainer® tube in 876 newly inserted central venous ports at the end of the surgical procedure.
Considering all the ports together, the median time needed to fill a 10 ml Vacutainer® tube in the operating room immediately after implantation was 17.00 seconds (mean 17.94 sec, SD 4.04 sec, range 11.43-63.62 sec, percentile 5: 14.45 sec, percentile 80: 19.51 sec, percentile 95: 24.55 sec).
Measurement with a stopwatch of the filling time of a Vacutainer® tube during blood sampling is feasible for both port catheters and peripheral veins.

The median filling time for an identical 10 ml Vacutainer® tube was 15.20 seconds (median 15.51 sec, SD 2.17 sec, range = 12.07-21.55 sec, percentile 5: 12.76 sec, percentile 95: 20.94 sec).
From this study it can be hypothesized that the 20G-Huberneedle, which was the segment with the smallest diameter in the study design, was not the only limiting factor of the flow rate: the diameter of the catheter makes a definite, although very small difference.
Measurement of the Vacutainer® filling time directly after the insertion procedure provides a baseline value and allows comparisons with further measurements in the follow-up of patients’central venous access devices.

 Abstract
This was not due to the anti-coagulant solution, since the CT was prolonged if citrate solution from a Vacutainer tube was transferred to a Monovette tube.
The CT decreased with incubation time, with maximal effect after 30–60 min, indicating that differences in vacuum at blood sampling was not the determinant factor.
The CT for plasma sampled from Vacutainer tubes after 1 h was 11.7 ± 1.9 min (n = 5) and was not affected by addition of corn trypsin inhibitor to inhibit fXIIa or an antibody against tissue factor.

Comparative stabilities of quantitative human immunodeficiency virus RNA in plasma from samples collected in VACUTAINER CPT, VACUTAINER PPT, and standard VACUTAINER tubes.Quantitative plasma HIV RNA levels were measured by branched-DNA signal amplification.
In order to minimize the variability of quantitative HIV RNA test results, our data suggest that samples collected for a particular assay should be processed at the same time postdraw using a particular tube type throughout a given study.
Although a decline in HIV RNA equivalents was seen in all collection devices after 30 h, a significantly greater decline in plasma HIV RNA equivalents occurred in acid citrate dextrose VACUTAINER tubes than in citrate CPT, PPT, and standard EDTA VACUTAINER tubes.
