Vacuum brake - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Vacuum braking is for all practical purposes now a dead technology; it is not in large-scale use anywhere in the world, supplanted in the main by air brakes.
The vacuum brake was considered preferential to the early air brake in railroad applications largely because it was cheaper to install on a steam locomotive.
Vacuum brakes are not used on road vehicles because a continueous bleed of air is harder to maintain, also, there is not as much room for large diameter cylinders.

Vacuum Brakes   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
The vacuum in the brake pipe is prevented from exceeding its nominated level (normally 21 Hg) by a relief valve, which opens at the setting and lets air into the brake pipe to prevent further increase.
The fall of the piston to the bottom of the brake cylinder causes the brake blocks to be released from the wheels.
During the brake application, the vacuum in the brake pipe is reduced by admitting air from the atmosphere.

Vacuum Brake Cylinders   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
When vacuum is created in the train-pipe, air passes freely from the bottom side of the piston, which will then fall by its own weight when an equal vacuum exists on both sides of it.
When the brake is applied, air enters the bottom side of the cylinder from the train-pipe and presses down on the ball valve, thereby preserving the vacuum on the top side.
The piston therefore rises due to the difference in vacuum and the brakes are applied.

 FMCSA - Regulation: 571.106
Brake hose means a flexible conduit, other than a vacuum tubing connector, manufactured for use in a brake system to transmit or contain the fluid pressure or vacuum used to apply force to a vehicle's brakes.
Brake hose assembly means a brake hose, with or without armor, equipped with end fittings for use in a brake system, but does not include an air or vacuum assembly prepared by the owner or operator of a used vehicle, by his/her employee, or by a repair facility, for installation in that used vehicle.
Vacuum tubing connector means a flexible conduit of vacuum that (i) connects metal tubing to metal tubing in a brake system, (ii) is attached without end fittings, and (iii) when installed, has an unsupported length less than the total length of those portions that cover the metal tubing.

 Troubleshooting Power Brakes, Larry Carley
Vacuum is good for a lot of things, like sucking gas through a carburetor, opening and closing airflow doors in a vehicle's climate control system, and for providing extra muscle for braking.
Vacuum boosters also have an external one-way check valve at the hose inlet that closes when the engine is either shut off or stalls.
Slow brake pedal return may be caused by excessive seal friction in the booster, faulty spool action or a restriction in the return line to the pump.

 Bleeding Motorcycle Brakes - webBikeWorld
Moisture in your braking system is very dangerous, as water boils faster than brake fluid and can lead to serious problems with the braking performance of your bike.
The container has a screw-on top which is airtight once sealed; the top has two nipples on it, one is for the hose that goes to the pump and the other is for the hose that goes to the bleed fitting.
Brake fluid is supposed to be pretty corrosive stuff on paint jobs, so I always keep a spray bottle of non-ammonia window cleaner (e.g., "Glass Plus" brand) nearby and some paper towels to spray and clean up any brake fluid drips as quickly as possible.

NASIOC - Vacuum brake bleed system
The other issue with a vacuum bleeder is that tiny air bubbles are sucked in past the bleed valve threads when it's open, so there always seem to be some bubbles visible in the line out of the valve which makes it hard to tell when you're done bleeding...
It depends on the velocity of the brake fluid in the line, the position where the air bubble is with the respect of the centerline of the tube, viscosity of the brake fluid, etc. Bottom line is you have a drag force and a bouyancy force acting on the bubble.
When you close the bleeder valve after vacuum bleeding, what happens to the bubbles that are still adherant to the inside of the bleeder valve threads or the inside wall of the tapered, threaded hole in the caliper due to surface tension?

The diesel is thus equipped with a vacuum pump, which is driven by a single belt off of the alternator.
The switch senses vacuum through a fitting in the vacuum manifold that intercepts the vacuum flow from the pump.
The low vacuum switch is mounted on the right side of the engine compartment, adjacent to the vacuum pump on F-250 and F-350 models.

Bleeding can be performed manually with vacuum equipment or with pressure equipment If vacuum or pressure bleeding equipment is used, it is important that the manufactures instructions be followed for proper results.

However, if pressure equipment is used, it will be necessary to hold the front brake metering valve open in order to bleed the front brakes.

A normal dental vacuum pump is used for suctioning all day long in the typical dental office, and consumes between 30 60 gallons of water per hour, said Dr. As concerned members of the Colorado community, the doctors and staff at Comfort Dental recognize the urgency of water conservation in drought ravaged Colorado.
These pumps are expected to be capable of reaching vacuum side pressures in the torr to millitorr range from 133 down to 0.13 Pa. This version is said to be micromachined because the two silicone layers containing the channels would be fabricated by casting silicone rubber on micromachined silicon molds.

Automotive Engineering International Online: Tech Briefs, April 2000, Page 1
Vehicular braking systems are either activated by the driver's effort on a hand lever or pedal, which is directly transmitted via a hydraulic link to the brake pad, or are partially or completely power assisted.
Once the brake pedal is activated, the vacuum valve is closed and the air intake valve is opened in proportion to the displacement of the push rod.
When the brake pedal is released, the spring moves the piston back, closing the air intake valve and opening the vacuum valve to rebalance the pressure between the two chambers.

AudiWorld Forums: Possibly a vacuum brake booster check valve is bad...
The function of the check valve is to maintain a supply of vacuum in the brake booster for just such an occasion as you describe.
Full throttle is lowest vacuum condition, and if you lift and brake hard immediately without vacuum reserve in the booster, you effectively have zero boost, and a rock hard pedal.
"brake on, brake off, settle, turn in, throttle, turn out, exit"..that's only one method.

Brake booster and vacuum - ShopForum   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
I have a vacuum tester, but I was under the impression I could only use it to test the vacuum system, and not the pump itself.
There should be no flow of vacuum through the booster unless the pedal is pushed, thus if you check the vacuum at the source tee with the line hooked to the booster it should give the same reading as if you remove the line and put your finger over it and retest.
A large drop in vacuum will result but should stabilize and pressure build if the pedal is held with constant force (not pumped - pumping will continue to deplete and exhaust till there is no more reservoir of vacuum).
