Vacuum casting - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Vacuum casting is a means of casting small metal parts or jewelry that have fine detail or for casting various plastic materials.
The liquid to be cast will be driven into the mold by atmospheric pressure, while the vacuum will also remove trapped air that would otherwise impede the free flow of the liquid casting material.
Vacuum casting is applied as an alternative to centrifugal casting of metals which is used in similar situations.

Vacuum casting proves ideal for robot casing: News from MCP Tooling Technologies
Vacuum casting resins from MCP Equipment achieved the speed of turnaround plus the translucent properties required to build the prototype models of Cybot, the new build-up robot available via a fortnightly magazine.
Amalgam's Prototyping Manager, Mike Harvey, explains, "By using vacuum casting to produce the prototypes, we were able to offer the client the speed of turnaround they wanted and something which for all intents and purposes had the looks and functionality of the production item.
The beauty of vacuum casting is that once you have a silicone mould of the final part design, you can produce prototypes in a variety of colours and in materials with a variety of properties.

App Solutions | Electrolux Case Study
Vacuum cleaners and their accessories are among the most common items in our everyday life, and like all domestic appliances they should perform their function reliably.
At the same time as the design and construction of the individual vacuum cleaner components, work had to start on the construction of a functional model to be used in the design analysis of noise level, filtering efficiency, performance and handling.
Prototypes were made of all the plastic parts of the Clario vacuum cleaner, including the upper and lower shells, controls, handle, switches, cable roller, trim for the microfilter screens, and catches.

 Steam Casting 1
I believe that the expensive high volume casters may actually use the force of a vacuum to cast the metal, but the small vacuum casters that are under $1,000.00 do not use the force of vacuum to actually cast the metal.
I believe that it is not the force vacuum that actually casts the metal in to the mold, but the force of suction that does the casting.
Pressure casting is used in large companies for casting what I call industrial metals--metals like high tech alloys and metals like magnesium, so I will not discuss this method much.

Aurora Metals - Vacuum Die Casting
The vacuum casting process was originated and developed by Aurora Metals Division over 45 years ago for casting of high strength, corrosion resistant aluminum bronzes.
The sprue opening is submerged below the surface of the molten metal and the vacuum is drawn within the receiver, creating a pressure differential between the die cavity and the molten metal in the crucible.
By controlling the vacuum, the pressure differential between the die cavity and the molten metal can be varied allowing for differential fill rates necessitated by part design and gating requirements.

 Vacuum Machines - Kingsley North
Vacuum assist casting can also be used on this unit with regular solid wall flasks.
When casting the machine creates a vacuum at one end of the flask, which pulls the air and gases from the mold so that the molten metal flows quickly to every opening.
Larger flasks can be cast with this machine than with the centrifugal machine (although it is not possible to specify exact sizes, as the amount of metal to be cast, the shape of the cavity, etc., will all affect the size).
