A VAD is a mechanical pump that supports a diseased or damaged heart by maintaining adequate blood flow and pressure.
The first VAD was used in 1969 as a “bridge” to heart transplantation, essentially taking over all or most of the heart’s work while the patient waited to receive a heart transplant.
Another drawback is that implantable VADs cannot be used in children or small adults, because of their size (approximately as big as a portable CD player).
