Vagabond (manga) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Beginning in 1998, the manga has been serialized in the weekly magazine Shukan Moningu and is published by Kodansha in Japan.
In 2002, Vagabond was bestowed with the highly-acclaimed Tezuka Osamu Cultural Award.
In the context as presented by Takehiko Inoue's Vagabond and Eiji Yoshikawa's Musashi, both Yoshioka Seijūrō and Denshichirō are Kempō's sons who are historically believed to have dueled with Miyamoto Musashi on numerous occasions.

Vagabond is one of the few stories I have read that make me sweat with anticipation before flipping to the next page.
The one negative aspect of Vagabond would have to be that not all the volumes are translated yet, and the reader might have to wait for the next volume to come out.
I believe that all types of comic readers can appreciate Vagabond although shojo manga (girls comics) readers might be a little put off by all the blood and death.

Mangamaniacs Review: Vagabond by Takehiko Inoue   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
One of the only young survivors of the Battle of Sekighara, Takezo is a lone warrior determined to survive and sharpen his skills as a samurai by challenging master swordsmen throughout Japan to find the height of his strength.
When the manga was to be translated it was the wish of the author to keep it in this way, so the artwork could be appreciated and items such as kimonos that the characters wear weren't seen worn back to front — something a process of mirroring an image has an effect on.
More manga should be published in such orientations to speed up their translations instead of being slaved over mirroring them for the "left to right" Western audience.

There is a glossary as the back of the book that explains some of the historical aspects of the story, which is a nice touch.
The artwork of Vagabond continues to be some of the best, if not THE best, I’ve seen in English translated manga.
The character artwork is very realistic, using a nice hatching technique to help bring each character’s facial expressions and features to life--and there are a variety of expressions here that bring the characters to life.

Vagabond is about the journey of Takezo, a young man, future master swordsman, who is in search of purpose and meaning to his life.
Vagabond is based off of a novel based on the geatest Samurai whom ever lived.
It fully exploits the advantage of the manga as a media and I feel the scenes from the comic are actually more alive than movie or novel.

This manga, and the later anime, have resulted in literally millions of Japanese picking up a game that few were playing regularly.
The manga is intended for a younger audience and has fewer sexual innuendos than the anime.
The manga is different in many ways from the anime with detailed discussions that would not work so well on the screen.

 Animefringe: Reviews - Vagabond Vol.3
The previous two volumes of Vagabond explain how Takezo and Matahachi escaped the patrols of the newly established Tokugawa Shogunate in a desperate attempt to return to their home village of Miyamoto.
It's a right-left manga, sold at a lower than average price, and there's nary a typographical or grammatical error to be found.
Overall, this is a great historical manga for those of you who want a break from supernatural, science fiction, or fantasy comics.

 Baka-Updates Manga - Vagabond
Vagabond is Takehiko Inoue's manga adaptation of "Musashi", Eiji Yoshikawa's fictitious account of Miyamoto Musashi's life.
Manga are inherently slow, since it takes time to draw all those pages, as opposed to a book, which can be written within a year, and contain 30-40 manga volumes worth of material.
The manga delves too deep into quasi-philosophical babbling, which has little impact on the story.

Archived Entry - 12/17/2004: "Manga review: Vagabond, No. 17"
Vagabond, based on the book Musashi by Eiji Yoshikawa, tells the story of Miyamoto Musashi, one of the most famous swordsmen in Japanese history.
In the case of Vagabond, No. 17, most of the book takes place during a single swordfight between Sasaki Kojiro and Yoshioka Denshichiro.
Because Vagabond is quite violent, it may not be for everyone, but I would definitely recommend it for adult readers.

Vagabond is created by Takehiko Inoue; who also created Slamdunk, one of the most popular manga.
One caution is that this manga is only permitted for 21 years old (above) readers since it contains so much bloody violence and also some sex scenes.
No wonder, this manga is actually based on Musashi, a novel created by Eiji Yoshikawa.

An excellent manga, presented with noticeable care, and sold at a lower-than-average cost.
I'm not sure about the proximity of Vagabond to the truth, but just like Braveheart I don't really care; this is a fantastic manga series.
There is an impressive amount of incredibly rendered fight scenes, an action packed story full of love and intrigue, and some very funny scenes here, but more than anything, this is the tale of a man on a journey of enlightenment.

The names, the history, basically the context of the story is a blur to me. I can't fairly judge the motivations of most of the players, aside from the base human emotions that drive parts of the story, and as a result I'm often completely lost.
Part of that confusion, in fact a large part of it, is in the choice that Viz has made to print the manga in its original form.
In addition, while Vagabond isn't my cup of tea, those seeking more comics in the vein of Lone Wolf and Cub should definitely check it out, as it boasts a lot in common with that well-regarded manga classic.

Vagabond is a stunning piece of work about that legendary warrior whose epic adventures the Japanese just can’t stop celebrating through various forms of entertainment, and if the first volume of Vagabond is any indication, they have good reason for this obsession.
Nevertheless, it’s off to a strong start with tons of potential, given that the end will probably find him having become legendary and noble warrior of his fantasies.
The color pages are a nice bonus for this collection, and although they’re few and far between, there’s slightly more here than in the average manga package.

In the most general terms, I've found that manga and anime fall into one of three categories: over-the-top science-fiction, over-the-top fantasy and legends about quiet, lone warriors.
Ages ago, two young men and friends from the same village -- Tazeko and Matahashi -- are the only survivors of a fierce battle that wiped out their people, and so they begin to wander the countryside.
The duo happens upon a pair of thieves -- a young girl and her mother -- and together, they end up facing the wrath of a gang of brigands.
