They were World champions from 1971 to 1974 then in 1976 they won their fifth world championship followed by the first gold medal awarded for ice dancing at the 1976 Winter Olympics.
Lyudmila Pakhomova died of cancer in 1986 and was interred in the Vagankovskoye Cemetery in Moscow, Russia.
In 1988, she was inducted posthumously along with her husband into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame.
