Crete is one of the 13 regions of Greece.
Crete has an elongated shape - 260 km from west to east and at its widest 60 km, the island is narrower at certain points, such as in the region close to Ierapetra where it has a width of only 12 km.
To the north Crete borders with the Sea of Crete (Greek: Κρητικό Πέλαγος), to the south it is bordered by the Libyan Sea (Greek: Λιβυκό Πέλαγος), to the west the Myrtoon Sea, to the east the Karpathion Sea.

The palm fronted beach at Vai (right), used in the "Bounty Hunters" commercial, is a great tourist attraction and coaches arrive from all over Crete.
North of Vai it is sometimes possible to enjoy naturism on more northerly of the the two beaches at Itanos: often deserted and no facilities; however reports suggest that the beach can be quite easily dominated by textiles and any nudists there "shelter" behind rocks.
This is a very remote part of Crete and if solitude isn't your thing you may not be too happy here.

Probably everybody has heard of Crete's famous beach with date palms...
Thousands of sun worshippers are decanted daily from tourist coaches, and some also attempt to camp overnight on the beach, which is, however, not permitted.
Today growing in a 20 hectare grove, this palm must have been widespread on Crete and the south-east Aegean in antiquity, and there are a few specimen at Preveli and Agios Nikitas, in Cyprus and south-west Turkey.
