When the followers of the defeated Mataafa were released from prison, they built a road from Apia to Vailima in appreciation for Stevenson's support of their unsuccessful struggle against the Germans.
Stevenson's wife, Fanny, died in California in 1914, and her ashes were brought back to Vailima and buried at the foot of Robert's grave.
Samoa's head of state lived in Vailima until hurricanes severely damaged the mansion in 1990 and 1991.

Stevenson named the place Vailima, meaning "five waters," for the small streams that ran across the property, and here he built his home and spent the last five years of his life.
In early 1992, after Hurricane Val did serious damage to Vailima, Mormon businessmen from Utah and Arizona obtained a 60-year lease on the property with the intention of creating a museum.
From the tomb there's a sweeping panorama of the verdant valley to the east with the misty mountains of Upolu beyond, and in the distance the white line of surf breaking endlessly on the reef.

There was nothing more better then to break open a case of Vailima..
They all laugh and one of the agents told me in a funny way that he thought that vailima was made with gasoline....I guess that was a Samoan Joke of the day!...we all laugh and they let me thru with my Vailima....Now!

 Robert Louis Stevenson, 1850-1894: Island 7 - In the South Seas
What at first was merely a house developed into an extensive estate with Stevenson playing the role of lord of the manor.
It was at Vailima that Stevenson died, aged 44, on December 3, 1894, and on the hill above it that he was buried.
On December 5, 1994, exactly one hundred years after Stevenson's funeral, Vailima was opened to the public as the Robert Louis Stevenson Museum.
