Vair - MiddleWiki   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
vairé), generally written vairy when definite tinctures are named: a party-coloured fur, properly argent and azure, which tinctures are always implied when no others are mentioned; but, as will be seen, it occurs even in the early rolls of different tinctures.
The name is evidently derived from the bell-like shape of the vair, the word beffroi being anciently used in the sense of the alarm-bell of a town.
Heraldic writers also speak of varry as meaning one of the pieces of which the vair is composed; they also used the terms vairy cuppy and vairy tassy for potent counter potent, perhaps from the drawings in some instances resembling cups, and that in the possible meaning of tassa.

Guillaume du Vair - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Guillaume du Vair (March 7, 1556 - August 3, 1621) was a French author and lawyer.
In 1595, Vair published his treatise De l'éloquence française et des raisons pour quoi elle est demeurée si basse, in which he criticizes the orators of his day, adding examples from the speeches of ancient orators, in translations which reproduce the spirit of the originals.
Du Vair had a great indirect influence on the development of style in French, for in the south of France he made the acquaintance of François de Malherbe, who conceived a great admiration for Du Vair's writings.

Precedents of Bruce Draconarius of Mistholme: Field Division - Vairy
Counterchanging a vair field isn't an acceptable practice: there is no heraldic difference between vair and "vair counterchanged", and the result is as visually indistinct as, say, Per pale checky Or and gules, and checky gules and Or.
It was announced in the cover letter of the July 93 LoAR that vair is vair, whether drawn in an earlier, undulating style or in a late-period, angular form; the difference is purely artistic, and shouldn't even merit mention in the blazon.
Vair ancient should not be explicitly blazoned in the SCA if it was not so blazoned in period; it is exactly the sort of artistic detail that should be left to the artist.

JAG - Metals, Colours and Furs
Vair was blue and white, notionally composed of squirrel pelts sewn together in such a fashion as to show the blue grey back of the animal alternately with its white underside.
Vair, in the early days, before its varieties were invented, was only of blue and white (never blue and silver, Azure and Argent).
William de Ferrieres, Earl of Derby, bore Vairy Or and Gules, the vair shaped in this manuscript illustration in the manner we describe as "ancient".

One exception mentioned is a form of vair (or at least, it is traditionally held to be a variation on vair) that is found in German heraldry.
This is a long digression (without illustrations, which is worse), but it serves to underline the relationship between obscure feather-like fields and the fur group – which finds a curious parallel in an Austrian coat of arms which was recently the subject of agitated discussion on the Flags of the World discussion list.

There is a scene when a young bride is forced to marry Arbaz Khan (Jatti Anjuman's brother) and on the night of her wedding she runs away with the man she has always loved.

In the Cinderella fairy tale, the slippers were of glass, but some 19th century French writers thought it was a mistake and there were supposed to be made of vair ("verre", glass, is a paronym).

Nor does it seem to be a case of mishearing, with Perrault writing verre for vair when transcribing an oral account, since vair, a medieval word, was no longer used in his time.
(Vair, variegated fur, from the Latin varius, varied, also is a root of miniver, originally menu vair, small vair, which referred initially to the fur — perhaps squirrel — used as trim on medieval robes and later was applied to the prized ermine, or winter weasel fur, on the ceremonial robes of peers.)
Finally, the glass slipper is peculiar to Perrault's telling of the story, which is one of the world's best-known and most widely distributed folktales.
