The Vaisheshika analysis of the categories for the universe was later combined with the stress on reasoning in another of the Six Schools, the Nyayas, to form the Nyaya-Vaisheshika school, sometimes called the Naiyayikas.
The Vaisheshika school was atomistic--that is, they believed that all things were made up of a few basic constituent things--and this atomism was the root of the school's metaphysics.
The Vaisheshikas subscribed to the causal model known as asatkaryavada, which posited that when a thing was created, it was a whole new aggregate, completely different from its constituent parts.

The Vaisheshika school attempts to identify, inventory, and classify the entities and their relations that present themselves to human perceptions.
Four such absences are recognized: previous absence, as of a new product; later absence, as of a destroyed object; total absence, as of colour in the wind; and reciprocal absence, as of a jar and a cloth, neither of which is the other.
The Vaisheshika system holds that the smallest, indivisible, indestructible part of the world is an atom (anu).

VaisheShika also prominently figures in the list of things learned by the Indo-greek king Menander, in course of his explorations of philosophy, in the text-“The questions of Menander”.
Thus, vaisheShika aims at understanding a substance in terms of the effect of external forces that act on it including gravity and the internal forces on its particles that cause their attraction, repulsion and vibrations.
The early date of the text and acceptance of the view that vaisheShika represents a scientific exploration raises two issues: 1) Was there an empirical base for the sUtras  2) What were the causes for the cessation of a physical interpretation of nature in the periods of Indian history that followed the pinnacle of vaisheShika.

In 1899 Max Müller, the distinguished linguist and scholar of religions, wrote "The Six Systems of Indian Philosophy", offering a clear, simply presented summary of the doctrine of the six Viewpoints based on their classic texts.
This is not surprising, since historically the Vaisheshika system has been united for much of its history with the Nyaaya Viewpoint.
It may seem as if the Vaisheshika was rather a disjointed and imperfect system.

In all probability, he officiated at the court of the Shaka princes of the Shilada clan, who at that time ruled from Purusapura.
During the formative years of his life, Vasubandhu may have been introduced by his father not only to the Brahmanical tradition but also to the postulates of classical Nyaya and Vaisheshika, both of which had influence on his logical thought.
Refutation of Vaisheshika and Samkhya theories had been presented by Vasubandhu already in the Abhidharmakosha, but it was perhaps from this point onward that Vasubandhu was regarded as a philosopher whose views could not be lightly challenged.
