Vakhtang’s bodyguards took him in his fortified residence of Ujarma, where he died in a few days and was buried in Svetitskhoveli Cathedral.

King Vakhtang gave orders to build a city in that spot and he gave the name to the new city because of the hot springs, which is Tbilisi (meaning: warm spot).
Construction of the fortress around the newly founded city was completed by Dachi of Udjarma, King Vakhtang Gorgasali’s son and according to the will of his father, in the VI century he moved the capital city from Mtskheta to Tbilisi.

Persian gave him name Gorgasali because of his helmet with wolf symbol on it (Gorgasar in Persian means wolf-head).
All his life Vakhtang Gorgasali was fighting with Iranians, he died in one of those fight in 502 when he was wounded.
Vakhtang Gorgasali is also a founder of the city of Tbilisi.

During the reign of Vakhtang Gorgasali and his successor Dachi Ujarmeli (V-VI centuries) new churches, monasteries sprang up in the oldest district of Tbilisi - Qala.
The Anchiskhati monastery is one of the ancient relic of the past that Tbilisi has preserved to our days.
Now it represents an architectural sight which is falling into peaces and if it will not be restored, in several years there will be nothing left from it.
