The Bagrationi dynasty ruled the country until it was annexed by the Russian Empire at the beginning of the nineteenth century.
Prince Vakhusti Bagrationi (1696-1768) was a geographer and historian during the eighteenth century in Georgia.
The stamp showing a portrait of Bagrationi and his map of the Caucasus, published in 1745, was issued in 1997 to commemorate the 300th anniversary of his birth.

Vakhushti - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Vakhushti (Georgian: ვახუშტი) (1696-1757) was a Georgian prince (batonishvili), geographer, historian and cartographer.
The chief of these were The Description of the Kingdom of Georgia (completed in 1745) and The Geographic Description of Georgia (completed in 1750), also two geographic atlases of the Caucasus region accompanied by the images of several historic coats of arms (1745-46).
Vakhushti’s geographic work was soon translated into Russian and French and served as a guide to many contemporary European travelers, geographers and cartographers to Caucasus up to the mid-19th century.

Bagrationi Dynasty - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Bagrationi dynasty /bɑgɹɑtjɪaniː/ (Georgian: ბაგრატიონი, bagrationi, ბაგრატიონთა დინასტია, bagrationt'a dinastia) was a ruling family whose ascendancy in Georgia lasted from the early Middle Ages until the early 19th century.
Traditional Georgian history writing begins the Bagrationi chronology in the 6th century and relates the family to earlier dynasties, though a version, more favored by modern Western scholars, has it that the Bagrationis descended from the late-8th-century Armenian refuge prince of the house of Bagratuni.
The Bagrationi family grew in prominence by the time when Georgian monarchy (Caucasian Iberia) had already fallen to the Sassanid Persian Empire in the sixth century, and the leading local princely families were exhausted by the Arab attacks.

Earlier, Vakhushti Bagrationi wrote about the Tushis: “…peradventure someone proves himself cowardish in heart, preferring to evade the battle, he will be fed not with people but with dogs, from their trough, and never again with humans…” (23, p.554).
We cannot be mistaken in presumption of that particular attitude of obsession with heroic resistance being paramount in the whole story of our past; the philosophy of permanent alertness and courage helped the nation to survive and made many outer enemies reconsider their determination on the elimination of the Georgian people.
Ioane Bagrationi writes that “…Georgians are equally caring for one another in times of joy and in times of sorrow; courageous, and victorious over their enemies, good at horse-riding and long marches, lovers of armour and horses”(30, p.553).

Unfortunately we lack direct historical written accounts on the monastery with the exception of a short information found in a work of prince Vakhushti Batonishvili (1696-1757) “Description of the Kingdom of Georgia”: “Down-stream [further than the monastery at Gviana] along the Ktsia canyon, at Pirghebuli, is a rock-cut monastery with a large, well-adorned church.
Therefore, the Queen of Queens mentioned in the lapidary inscription had to be a representative of the royal court of Bagrationis.
Consequently, the account of Prince Vakhushti Batonishvili about building the monastery of Pirghebuli by Queen Tamar was not proved to be correct, though the monument turned out to be built in the times of her reigning: Queen Tamar and Queen Rusudan were the historical figures of the same period.

Guria Did You Mean guria   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-22)
As for the etymology of the name of Guria, some say that the root of the word refers to restlessness and the word should mean ?the land of the restless?
as it was described in Vakhushti Bagrationi?s historical works of the 18th century.
According to the later explanation, in the times of Georgia?s prosperity, when its borders stretched from ?Nikopsia to Daruband?, Guria was situated in the heart of the Georgian territory.
