 Val Garays Tracked Drums
A couple weeks ago, Val showed up on my doorstep, cd in hand, anxious to get his demo on.
The kicks are deep and full and I liken the snare to what happens to the sound of a Les Paul when doubled: thick, full, sharp.
And for those of you who know Man Lee, these are, hands down, the best drums he's ever heard in his short life (he sat beside Val during the demo and listened intently to the work of a true professional).

I made it three feet deeper and four feet longer, but it had the same exact proximity to the control room." Besides the API console, the room boasted 24-track 3M 79 recorders - "which I still think are the best-sounding analog tape recorders ever made.
It was he who came up with the catchy riff and also led the band, which "was a conglomeration of the guys I wanted and the guys she wanted," Garay says.
Garay recalls that for the live session, Carnes was stationed in a vocal booth adjoining the control room and she sang into "the same vocal mic I've used on every vocalist on every record I have made since my days at the Sound Factory: a Neumann U67 tube with the API in front of it.

We began recutting songs for our album with Val firmly in control, and bringing in other players to "enhance" our music.
Val was a talented engineer who had lucked out with "Bette Davis Eyes." His personality was wanting.
On July 28 I was lucky enough to attend a Duane Eddy rehearsal, because his sax player, Steve Douglas, was a friend of one of Val's employees, and Steve gave me a sax lesson.

 Erikah Karst - Dutchsound.nl
Never wanting to do anything but play her music and perform (not counting temporary aspirations of being a ballet dancer or an archaeologist), Karst's career is in the ascendant.
After two previous releases, 1997's Grown Woman and 2000's Buellton Diaries (recorded in LA with top producers David Kershenbaum and Val Garay), Strangely Happy, recorded in Austin, Texas, is Karst's latest musical offering, and it's chock-full of sophisticated and feel-good modern pop tunes.
Feeding off a wealth of experience as a live performer, Strangely Happy finds the singer/songwriter coming into her own and finding her own voice, that of a pure and confident auteur.

 RollingStone.com: Beyond Appearances : Santana : Review
There's still a lot of power to Santana, but it gets squandered pretty thoroughly on this album, as producer Val Garay shoehorns the band into a series of unflattering and ill-managed bids for mass-market acceptance.
Garay has them trying everything, from the rap of "Brotherhood" to the Genesis-style pomp of "How Long," but throughout, Santana exhibits more competence than enthusiasm.
Even material that would have suited the band in the past, such as Curtis Mayfield's "I'm the One Who Loves You," falls embarrassingly flat, as singer Greg Walker fails to connect with the lugubrious rhythm section.

FRETPLAY : Review : Motels All Four One (Exp)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
But producer Val Garay(formerly an engineer for Linda Ronstadt) came up with a brilliant idea:get some very slick L. sessionmen to fine tune the arrangements, and replace the group members on the instrumental tracks in the studio, leaving the group members the simpler task of immitating the newly improved arrangements onstage.
When Garay was asked about the use of sessionmen in an interview with the(long-defunct) magazine "Modern Recording and Music",he said "Maybe they'll be ready(to play) next time",which obviously humiliated the group.
What Val Garay did in the studio(to get the group hit albums & singles) was correct.
