Val Logsdon Fitch - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Val Logsdon Fitch (born March 10, 1923) is an American nuclear physicist.
Fitch and co-researcher James Watson Cronin were awarded the 1980 Nobel Prize in Physics for a 1964 experiment that proved that certain subatomic reactions do not adhere to fundamental symmetry principles.
Specifically, they proved, by examining the decay of K-mesons, that a reaction run in reverse does not merely retrace the path of the original reaction, which showed that the reactions of subatomic particles are not indifferent to time.

Val Logsdon Fitch was born to Fred B. and Frances M. (Logsdon) Fitch on March 10, 1923, on a cattle ranch near Merriman, Nebraska, a short distance from the South Dakota border.
The orbital diameter calculated by Fitch allowed him to estimate the size of the lead nucleus used in the experiment, a size that turned out to be much smaller than previously had been estimated.
Fitch continued his research on particle physics at Princeton and, in the mid-1960s, became involved in another project with revolutionary consequences.

The degree recipients are: Val Logsdon Fitch, a Nobel Prize winner in physics; Mae Jemison, a former astronaut who now teaches environmental studies at Dartmouth College; Wendy Kopp, founder and president of Teach For America; Mary F. Lyon, a geneticist; and Gordon E. Moore, the co-founder of Intel Corporation.
With James Cronin, he was awarded the 1980 Nobel Prize in physics for the experimental discovery of "charge parity" violation in the decay of the elementary particles called K mesons.
Val Fitch's legacy to the field of physics encompasses also the gifted teachers and researchers who are his former students; his contributions to the nation include his term on the President's Science Advisory Council and his presidency of the American Physical Society.

At Princeton, Cronin and the American physicist Val L. Fitch, a former colleague from Brookhaven, conducted research on weak nuclear interactions, which are responsible for the transformation (decay) of subatomic particles.
In the investigation of the decay of neutral K-mesons, they discovered in 1964 that certain particle interactions are affected by the direction of flow of time and not reversible as had been thought.
Cronin and Fitch shared the 1980 Nobel Prize in physics for “the discovery of violations of fundamental symmetry principles in the decay of neutral K-mesons.”

American particle physicist who was corecipient with James Watson Cronin of the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1980 for an experiment conducted in 1964 that disproved the long-held theory that particle interaction should be indifferent to the direction of time.
Working with Leo James Rainwater, Fitch had been the first to observe radiation from muonic atoms; i.e., from species in which a muon is orbiting a nucleus rather than an electron.
This work indicated that the sizes of atomic nuclei were smaller than had been supposed.

Thus, it was thought that CP (the product of charge conjugation and parity transformation) must be conserved - in which case every particle must have an antiparticle with the same spin but with opposite handedness and additive quantum numbers.
In 1964, James Watson Cronin and Val Logsdon Fitch showed that CP was violated in the decay of neutral k-mesons - an experiment that won them the 1980 Nobel Prize in Physics.
CP violation automatically implies T (time) reversal violation from the theory that CPT is always conserved.

It seems incredible by modern standards that by the age of 20 my father, Fred Fitch, had acquired a ranch of more than 4 square miles and had persuaded a local school teacher, Frances Logsdon, to marry and join him in living there.
They moved to the ranch just 20 years after the battle of Wounded Knee, which occurred about 40 miles northwest.
