		Valandovo is a town with a significant history and past that left such cultural roots and traditions that make this town an inevitable stop (site) in the interperetation of touring of the cultural past of the country and the region.
		Furthermore, very interesting and important discoveries are the ancient mosaics of Valandovo, the necropolis discovered near Dedeli dating since the Iron period, the monastery, the church dedicated to the St.George etc. This Mediterranean region was always a significant crossroad for the passengers and the goods that were travelling from Europe to the Near East.
		With the construction of the railway Skopje-Gevgelija-Salonica in 1873, and to the highway Skopje-Salonica, this region became a significant transit coridor because it is only 70 km far from Salonica and 145 km from Skopje-the capital of Macedonia.

		Once, while hiking in one of the many wild areas surrounding Valandovo, I came upon a shepherd who proceeded to tell me all about the 1961 earthquake that rocked the region.
		An agricultural town, Valandovo is relatively unheard of because it is the secret poster child for the phase “Jack of all trades, master of none.” It may not have the best vineyards in Macedonia, but it’s winery and the surrounding valley of vineyards produce mass quantities of the delightful drink.
		All this wealth of plant life is attributed to Valandovo’s wonderful ‘microclimate’ as it’s called by the locals.

		Mitko was ordained deacon then priest in the Macedonian Orthodox Church and sent to serve with his popadia in the town of Valandovo in southern central Macedonia.
		While serving in Valandovo their daughter Alexandra was born.
		In 1982, Father Mitko, accompanied by his family, was sent to Australia to serve in Rockdale, and then Queanbeyan, during the episcopate of Metropolitan Timotej, Macedonian Orthodox Metropolitan of Australia and New Zealand.

		What was once the Pela gulf has for centuries now been filled with the deposits brought in deltas of the three largest Macedonian rivers (Vardar or Axios, Ludia or Galiko and Bistrica or Chaliakmon), resulting in a recess of the sea shore thirty km southwards.
		The part of the Lower Vardar valley belonging to the Republic of Macedonia is consisted of two alluvial areas (the Valandovo and Gevgelija plains).
		The Gevgelija region was located in the very geographical centre of the Lower Vardar valley region, and in it, on the Vardarski Rid site the central settlement was located, used during almost all periods of pre-history and early ancient times.
