On October 11, 1776, a naval engagement known as the Battle of Valcour Island was fought in that strait between British and United States naval forces under Benedict Arnold.

Funding for the Bluff Point Lighthouse on Valcour Island was approved by Congress on July 15, 1870 in the amount of $15,000.
In the mid-1980's, Dr. Raboff offered the property to the State of New York, which controlled the rest of Valcour Island as part of Adirondack State Park, so the lighthouse could be protected and made available to the public.
The island is roughly a mile offshore from the towns of Valcour and South Junction.

With nothing but sandals to protect my feet from the abundant poison ivy and having toured the island the preceding summer with the couple who have been working so hard to restore this island so that its history could be appropriately honored and appreciated, I declined to join her.
