Castilian (what you call Spanish) speakers don't understand Catalan nor the Majorcan Catalan dialect, but they are able to understand some of the Valencian Catalan dialect.
That's because Valencian has simple vowel sounds (and in some areas is a bit "castilianized"), whereas Catalan keeps the old differentiation between open and closed vowels.
Joking aside....The Neapolitan dialect and Sardinian languages are VERY close to latin.
