Valerie Lady Goulding, who has died aged 84, acted as a courier between King Edward VIII and the prime minister Stanley Baldwin during the Abdication Crisis; later she founded and managed the largest charity hospital in Ireland.
Valerie Goulding's father, Sir Walter Monckton, the future 1st Viscount Monckton of Brenchley who became Attorney-General to the Duchy of Cornwall and a confidant of King Edward VIII, made her his secretary during the crisis.
Valerie was presented as a debutante in the spring of 1936, by which time the rumours of the King's affair with Mrs Simpson were circulating.
