As an 18-year-old, Brumel with a personal best of 2.17m, entered the 1960 Rome Olympics as a talented but relatively unknown athlete, but was only bettered by his Soviet team mate the Georgian Robert Shavlakadze, who took the gold with a first time clearance of 2.16m.

In 1962, Brumel won the European title (2.21m) and in 1964 took the Olympic crown in Tokyo with an Olympic record of 2.18m, again defeating Thomas.

Despite an international career that was cut short after only six years, the springy Russian was clearly the top high jumper of the 20th century.
Over the next five seasons, 1961-65, Brumel, standing just 6-3/4 and weighing 176lb (1.85/80) would dominate not only Thomas, but also every other barmeister in the world, racking up five straight No. 1 TandFN World Rankings, a feat no other high jumper has ever matched, before or since.
After winning Olympic gold at Tokyo in '64, Brumel went undefeated in '65, but on October 3 of that year was cruelly injured in a motorcycle accident.
