Valery Bryusov was born on December 1 1873 in Moscow, into a merchant's family.
Bryusov began his literary career in the early 1890s while still a student at Moscow State University with his translations of the poetry of the French Symbolists (Paul Verlaine, Maurice Maeterlinck, and Stéphane Mallarmé) as well at that of Edgar Allan Poe.
Bryusov's mature works were notable for their celebration of sensual pleasures as well as their mastery of a wide range of poetic forms, from the acrostic to the carmina figurata.

Born in Moscow to Yakov Kuzmich Bryusov, the son of a freed peasant turned successful businessman, and Matryona Aleksandrovna Bakulina, the daughter of a landed nobleman and minor writer.
The Wreath (aka Stephanos), the fifth collection, brings Bryusov first major poetic success and constitutes the poet reaching his full maturity, but also demonstrates a rift between himself and the younger generation of Symbolists.
Disappointed in the direction in which the new generation has taken Symbolism, Bryusov turns his attention to teaching, critical writing, and to his translations of Virgil, Poe, and Armenian poetry.

Valery Gergiev and the Kirov Opera finally arrive at the Melbourne Festival with two sizzling productions in tow.
Given its provocative subject matter, it is not surprising that it found a more welcoming audience in the latter part of the twentieth century.
Although it is based on a novel by the 19th-century Russian author Valery Bryusov — and contains many autobiographical elements — the opera is set in 16th-century Germany.

Conductor Valery Gergiev and his Kirov Opera and Orchestra, the 240-strong company from St Petersburg, were the centrepiece of the 2001 Melbourne International Arts Festival, arriving only hours before they were to perform The Fiery Angel - their travel complicated by the war in Afghanistan.
Prokofiev, himself a prodigy in St. Petersberg, had already written two operas: The Gambler (Dostoevsky) and Love of Three Oranges, when in Europe in 1923 he adapted Valery Bryusov's notorious novel about sexual obsession and demonic possession into The Fiery Angel.
In this interview, Valery Gergeiv talks to Julie Copeland about interpreting Prokofiev's music and his mission to 'internationalise' the Russian repertoire.

CONTEXT - This Week in Arts and Ideas from The Moscow Times
Musically and dramatically perhaps the most powerful and difficult to perform of all Prokofiev's eight operas, "The Fiery Angel" was completed in 1927, but remained unplayed until a concert performance in Paris in 1954, a year after the composer's death.
Last week, as the decor of Georgy Tsypin, also Zambello's collaborator in "Turandot," was being set in place for the first stage rehearsal of "The Fiery Angel," Zambello described her approach to the opera.
"Much of Bryusov's novel is inaccessible to readers today," she said, "and his 16th-century Germany is just a metaphor.

He began the opera in 1920 but the work did not go smoothly and it was not completed until 1927, and revised it later in attempts to have it performed (it was not performed until 1955).
