Valiant was built for British Rail by the English Electric Co. in early 1968 and delivered on April 2, 1968.
The 27,500-ton HMS Valiant, built at Glasgow, served in the North Sea during the last two years of World War I. During the 1920s and 1930s, she was twice refitted and upgraded.
The Valiant rejoined the British East Fleet in the Indian Ocean at the end of January 1944, along with the Queen Elizabeth and the Renown (for which BR loco 429 was renamed).

The Italian submarine Scirè was a vessel of the class "600" series "Adua".
This type of submarine was built for short cruises and was protected by a single hull and a false keel.
The most important mission was the one of December 19th, 1941 when human torpedoes launched by the Scirè sank the battleships Queen Elisabeth and Valiant, the tanker Sagona and the destroyer Jervis in the shallow waters of the port of Alexandria.

The third Medal of Honor awarded to a submariner in World War II was earned by then-CDR Lawson P. "Red" Ramage for a blistering night surface action against a Japanese convoy south of Taiwan in July 1944.
A tall, genial redhead, Ramage was born in Monroe Bridge, Massachusetts on 19 January 1909 and graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1931.
In December 1962, her classification was changed to auxiliary submarine, AGSS-384, which was retained until she was stricken from the Navy Register in 1969.
