  The Valjoux 7750 Engine
Valjoux hadn't so much lost the contest as slept through it.
The traditional design characteristics that we now associate with the higher watchmaking art &endash; in part, because of the sophisticated marketing strategies of luxury watchmakers &endash; could not be included in a utility movement intended for the general market.
The Valjoux 7750 is available direct from the factory with three enhanced finishes in addition to the standard finish: "Elaboré," "Top" and "Chronomètre." A separate department handles special customer requests.

Gesagt, getan: 1946 wartete Valjoux mit dem neuen, ebenfalls 6,95 mm hohen Kaliber 72C auf, bei dem sich Wochentag und Monat durch kleine Zifferblattausschnitte ablesen lassen.

 WatchRap General Watch Discussion Board
Regarding the design of movements: A high end company X produces a new movement that all agree is of very high quality and craft but over the next 2 years, it becomes evident that it's not performing well and later found due to a flaw in its design.
I prefer not to generalize too much, as there are always exceptions and especially when it comes to questions of longevity, it's very difficult to say anything with certainty, and basically impossible if the movement is not at least 50 years old and one has A LOT of experience with it.
If you took an IWC based Valjoux chronograph (found in their Fliegerchronograph) and compared it to a brand that uses a stock Valjoux, are there significant improvements in quality parts and finish of the IWC that would probably result in increased longevity of the movement?

After noticing this, I started to do some research on the Valjoux 7750 movement and found out that a (normally) plastic brake is used to start and stop the 12 hour hand.
