  The Las Casas-Sepúlveda Controversy: 1550-1551
The great debate of Valladolid coalesced around long-debated issues, particularly the right of conquest and just war, which epitomized the contrast between the Indian and European worlds.
Therefore, the effect of the debate was to at least keep the Indian cause in the minds of the Spaniards.
In the ensuing years after Valladolid, Sepúlveda continued to be the champion of the encomenderos, while Las Casas established himself as the outstanding defender of the Indians.

The Valladolid debate (1550 1551) concerned the treatment of natives of the New World.
Held in the Spanish city of Valladolid, it opposed two main attitudes towards the Conquests of the New Worlds.
The debate did result in the weakening of the encomienda system, but did not substantially alter the treatment of the Indians.

The Literature of Justification - New Spain - Essays
While it can be said that Las Casas won the day at Valladolid by virtue of the privileging of his discursive arguments in subsequent official policy, the work of the "loser" Sepúlveda was not simply left to molder upon the shelf of justification literature.
Noting that there were discussions about suppressing Sepúlveda's book prior to the Valladolid debate (179), Bernice Hamilton surmises that the University ban on Sepúlveda probably resulted from the widespread influence of Vitoria, two of whose students held the chairs of St. Thomas at Alcalá in 1548 (175).
Thus the real loser of the Valladolid debate on the justification of New World conquest was the Native American, forced to be identified as either noble (submissive) savage or fierce (resistant) barbarian, either a tabula rasa awaiting conversion or an obstacle to the propagation of the faith.

The theme was whether Indians should be regarded as God's creatures on a par with their Spanish conquerors, endowed with souls and thus worthy of Christian salvation.
The debate lasted for several months, and from such difficult material, playwright Jean-Claude Carriere (whose play "La Terrasse" is being produced at the Manhattan Theater Club this spring) has forged one of the most moving shows in Paris this year.
Playing at Theatre de l'Atelier and directed by Jacques Lassalle, "La controverse de Valladolid" (The Valladolid Debate) charts the confrontation between the Dominican Bartolome de Las Casas (Jacques Weber) and the philosopher Sepulveda (Lambert Wilson) under the authority of a Papal legate (Bernard Verley).

Valladolid debate - KnowledgeIsFun.com   (Site not responding. Last check: )
The Valladolid Debate was a debate between protagonists of two opposing attitudes towards the Conquests of the New Worlds, speculation over the humanity of natives of the New World and related subjects.
It should be noticed that the debate was over two distinct notions - the legitimacy or lack thereof of the Conquests, and the other being the treatment of the natives of the New World.
Largely as a result of the Valladolid Debate and its conclusions, which helped clarify Catholic thought on the controversy, colonists from Catholic countries in the New World tended to settle amongst and intermarry with the natives rather than expel or reduce them to ghettos.

At Valladolid, Las Casas argued against Juan Gineas de Sepualveda, another theologian, that Indians were human beings.
The judges of the debate did not reach a definite conclusion, but Valladolid represents a consolidation of Spanish and papal misgivings going back to 1500, and gross mistreatment of the Indians gradually lessened.
Again, we now take it for granted that even nations deeply alien to us have a right to their own territory and culture, but it is largely due to the reflections begun by Francisco de Vitoria, a Dominican theologian and friend of Las Casas, that we have such principles.

This was precisely the issue of the famous disputation summoned by the Spanish King Charles V at Valladolid in 1550.
The Dominican Bartolome de las Casas argued vehemently against using force but he was fighting against the practice of the day, and the outcome of Valladolid was ambiguous at best.
In its most extreme form, it harks back to the wrong side of the Valladolid debate, the argument of Juan Gines de Sepulveda that Indians did not have a rational soul and were subject by nature to their European masters.
