Valle Grande, known to geologists as the Valles Caldera and the Jemez Caldera, is a scenic area in the Jemez Mountains of northern New Mexico in the United States.
Until recently, it was part of the Baca Ranch, property of the Dunigan family; however, the owners sold the surface estate of 95,000 acres (380 km²) and seven-eighths of the geothermal mineral estate to the federal government, which is trying to find a way to let the public enjoy the land without spoiling it.
The circular topographic expression of the Valles caldera measures 22 kilometers (14 miles) in diameter.

Valle Grande (Va-lye Gra-n-de), also known as the Valles Caldera, is a pristine area in the Jemez Mountains of northern New Mexico in the United States.
It is the younger of two calderas in the region, having collapsed over and buried the Toledo Caldera (which might have collapsed over yet older calderas.) These two large eruptions took place 1.4 million and 1 million years ago.
The upper Bandalier tuff is believed to have been deposited during eruption and collapse of the Valles Caldera.

The Valle Grande formation is held to be a distinctive facies embracing parts of the Borracha and Chimana formations.

Retracing, on a map, the route to the Valle Grande Ranch Obsidian locality, I found that the obsidian occurs on the northern end of the hill known as Cerro del Medio.
The youngest volcanic formation in the Jemez is the Banco Bonito obsidian flow, another of the lava upwellings along the fractures of the Valles Caldera.
It is exposed in roadcuts along highway 4, between the LaCueva picnic ground and the Valle Grande.

From Valle Grande I had to return to the Samaipata-Aiquile road because excessive rain did not allow me to go any further into the Andes on unpaved roads without bridges.
In Valle Grande there were also some washed out pink flowered Bomareas growing in the hedges along the road.
In the Samaipata area which is much drier than Valle Grande there is mixed secondary deciduus scrub and Cacti and the owner of one of the Hotels in Samaipata has a small cactus nursery dispaying many common "imported" cacti but also some of the interesting local ones.

Authorizing legislation, called the Valles Caldera Preservation Act, H.R., passed the House and Senate and was signed by President Clinton on July 25, 2000.

Beginning today, Laboratory scientists, along with scientists from the Valles Caldera National Preserve, the United States Geological Survey and the University of New Mexico will begin the first of two drilling projects in the Valle Grande to remove two core samples.

 Valle Grande National Preserve
Remember getting into the car that night at work and seeing the smoke from the fires....pretty grim feeling.
Valle Grande is the ancient caldera of a volcano (note the cinder cone in the above picture).
When it belched millions of years ago it blew its top off (literally) and spewed volcanic material over this section of the country, giving the soil differing characteristics and coloration (the source of the pink tuft that Indians dug caves in at the monument).
